Yes, I bought one & this is what you are asking about. I thought it was good enough for me to spend the cash.
Quality? It's based on a factory sprocket, so that's got to be good. Have a look at the machining,... does that look OK to you?

Is it necessary? Thats for you to decide, & only you can make that decision.
As for me, no, it isn't necessary, but I wanted one, & that's reason enough for me.

You will need the timing case that goes with it & this is best based on the Datsun 1000 or 1200 timing case, but the later ones can serve as a base for modification too.

I'll let you know when i build the engine. The plan is to experiment with slightly advanced cam timing in an attempt to fatten up the lower end of the rev range while sacrificing just a little of the top end.
This will be the subject of some discussion with several cam grinders before i take the plunge.

The body is the first priority at the moment.

I have one of these items too
My engine builder said it was alot easier to setup the cam just the way he wanted it

Unfortunatly my modified timing cover leaks alittle oil despite me making a gasket to suit. I believe its actually the boltholes that are the cause.
My cover plate is physically larger than the one on the datrats site and has more caphead screws. Problem is it needs to have the front pulley removed to get the cover off........ but its a racecar and we're forever pulling things apart and putting them back together so its no biggie.

I advise getting the gear..... makes things alot easier in initial setup.

Had one for years and it is still in there. Home build in the back shed. See what you can do when there is nothing to do and you are out of RUM. Not that hard to make with the rite tooling.
