I would like to know what is normal for an engine temp. I have a 73 sedan with a newly rebuilt A14. Most of it is standard except for some porting in the intake, head and exhaust
and Total Seal rings. I removed the old A12 radiator and install one from a 210 with an A15. My thermostat is a 180 degree.
The temp sensor in the head reads constant at around 200 degrees (driving and idling).
I'm using an electric fan and I've set the sensor at 200 degrees. If I set it any warmer, it stays on most of the time. At 200 the fan turns on and off when idling and is off when
cruising.
I am ready to pull the A14 and install my newly rebuilt A15 with 30 thou over, steep cam, ported head and Total Seal rings.
Is 200 degrees OK or will I need a new or different radiator?

I'm not sure what the running temp is for the A series engines. Is it still hooked up to the original heat guage? If so I am wondering where it lines up on that. I had a used B210 radiator
that I thought was fine in my 1200. Even though I had the same type of radiator in my car before, it ran hot with this particular radiator...it was a crappy radiator, even though it was much
bigger than standard. So I went and bought a rebuilt B210 radiator from a huge radiator place in Tacoma, WA (close by you), I think it was called US Performance Radiator, their logo is a
little cactus. They had some that were rebuilt but had some of the fins bent, so they sold it cheaper, I think I paid just under $100. They even pressure tested it while I was there. I
haven't had any overheating problems yet, even going 110-135 mph sustained (half hour). I would also go buy a Nissan factory 180 degree thermostat, they're way better than any aftermarket one
(Stant, SuperStant, etc) with the exception of Robert Shaw brand (those are good too).

I have a slightly modified A12 with a 6 1/2qt B210 radiator and a 195deg thermostat. At sustained speeds on the freeway the water temp stays at around 180deg, even on warm days. On hot
days it often goes up to 200deg. The electric fan kicks on only when Im stopped or in slow traffic.
On the other hand my oil temp sits at 200deg and has gone up to 245deg. On hot days, forget about it, Im constantly watching the oil temp.
Now that I have installed an oil cooler, the oil temp stays at about 180 and has never gone above 200. A couple of weeks ago i drove for about an hour at 80mph in 100deg weather. The
water temp sat at 195-200 and the oil temp never went past 200.
Other temps...(i have too many gauges)
trans temp 130 to 170
diff temp 160 to 200
air cleaner temp is the same as the outside air temp as long as the car is moving

In my first 1200, I cut out the wall in front of the radiator and installed a 3-core cross-flow radiator from an Oldsmobile. I never used a thermostat and in the summer, the guage would
barely read up to the cool mark with the turboed A12. When I put the A14 in, the guage ran a little higher. The cross-flow is the way to go. I have an aluminum cross-flow VW Jetta radiator
in my coupe now and it works fine. The oil cooler is a must. I also added a power steering pump with an electric motor into my oil system to keep pressure on the turbo after shutdown. I
also used it to pressurize the oil system before start-up. I got a bit over 90,000 miles out of that couple of hundred HP A12 with no problems and believe me that little motor screamed all
of the time. When people heard it, it made then turn their heads and look at what was making that unique sound.
