hey guys,

i'd like to know if any o you have had to put a heat shield over your extractors to stop the hot air getting to you carbs on your A-14'S? at the moment on a warm day when i go for a long drive my motor is not as crisp as normally and only revs to +-5200 rpm in top gear, where as on a cool night it will rev to +-6000. could turbulint air cause this?? (sucking air away from the carb???)cause i'm normally doing about 156kph at 5200.

Manty thanks
nicholas

It probably is the temperature. You can use thin aluminum sheet, or use the heat shield from a 1979-1982 B310.

Cold air intake will help also. Nissan fitted it to some cars.

Hi Nicholas

As far as I remember you have a VW beach buggy with the A14 in the back, right?
OK.
The thing is hot air is less dence than cold air. basically your engine is getting more oxygen in when cold as when it is hot.
That is why when cold your car will perform better than when it is hot.
Something else.
I really do not think it is extractors that is causing your car to rev less in top gear.
At about 150km/h, that you mention, the wind is so quick that the heat has no time to get to the carbs.
When you idle at the traffic light it will cause a problem of less power.
I would fit a heat shield anyway for dragracing so that when you are waiting at the line your carbs does'nt cook and give less performance.
Try also to make a ram air effect to your carbs for when you are driving fast the air is forced from the front to your carbs or carb.

Guys, please correct me if I am wrong, but I think it is something like that.

Goodluck

Sounds about right. Maybe jetting the carbs for the increased temperatures would help.

Wrapping your headers is always a good idea, it can increase horsepower without taking into account, the effect on the ambient air temperature.
looks good too.

I don't mean to shoot down the header wrap idea, but I've heard and read that they are not a good idea on mild steel headers. The wrap does such a good job, the intense heat will degrade the steel and blow a hole in the headers. Usually around the first bend from the exhaust ports.
I remember seeing an article about this in HotRod or CarCraft magazines.
Anyways, I pulled mine off. So I don't have any long term header wrap experience.

Point taken, it would be a shame if this does happen cos I'm wrapping my mild steel headers, I guess I'll find out in the future.

i just found out that the wrap cause more problems than anything else, it causes the pipe to just prematurely.

so i'm going to have to look at a different option
