which cam?

Hi all,

just finished installing a12 into my off road race buggy and need to know what cam to run.

It is an a12 with forged 40"flat top pistons, balanced everything, A14 head ported and polished and port matched to twin 40mm webbers.

Is running great with the slightly hot cam that came with it before I rebuilt it but feel there is more. It idles very easily at 700 rpm and seems to start to make more power around 3000 rpm and revs okay but not heaps.

I dont have a dial indicator or degree wheel so cant work out what it is.

Anyone know a grind that might work off the shelf?

Also is it possible to change cam without removing the head? Magnets to hold the lifters perhaps?.

And finally is it true that there is a crossflow head to suit the A12 and if so are they of much benefit.

Cheers

there is a crossflow head to suit the A series, but it's not an A series head. it's an E series head, used in the N12 pulsars and the like. but make sure you get the turbo head, not the NA head. the flow rates of both heads vary dramatically - and i dare say the NA E series head on an NA A series engine will yeild marginal results at best over a worked A series head.

there is a thread on this floating about recently. search for "E series heads onto A series blocks."

as for the cam - what kind of power are you chasing? do you want it to retain the same characteristics of the old cam down low but have better top end? or want to sacrifice it all for top end? with cams advice you need to be pretty specific about what you want.

Thanks

I can lose a little of the down low power but would like it to have a better top end.

cheers

Sounds like the stock Datsun 1200 cam: power band is approximately 3000-5000 rpm.

There was a A-series crossflow head, the works A12Y head.

i found this in a thread about the 1200sss marketed in new zealand.

The 70 degree overlap "rally" camshaft replaces the standard unit, and PD mechanics then fit the works designed free-flow exhaust manifold, inlet manifold, and the impressive pair of Dellorto DHLA twin-choke side draught carburettors.

Any idea what this 70 degree camshaft isand where you could get one?

cheers
