depends on how you treat it!
dumping the clutch and doing burnouts will kill the box quickly , but then that will kill most gearboxes
if you want a stronger gearbox find a '60 series box from an a14/ a15 powered car like the aussie sunny /78-'80

If you never do burnouts and don't dump the clutch, there's a good chance it will break (mine did). Any transmission from a B210 or B310 will be strong enough (60 or 63 series).

No, go a celica conversion. 5 speeds and strength. I find the A15's flog the bearings out from loading the gearbox up too much. I have an A15 with it's 16th 'box attached sitting on my shed floor at the moment. At the time I started playing with A series I reasoned that it would be cheaper to swap a few gearboxes in than do the celica conversion. I was wrong.

tommy,
my ute is the primered one you saw the day we went to the burnouts, it has a worked a14 in it, and i absolutely flog the arse out of it (lots of races and heaps of burnouts). it still has the a12 4 speed behind it and i havent had a problem yet. i had the standard diff in for a long time and it is still alright (i thought it broke but it didn't). The only thing i have really had problems with was i broke an engine mount. Stronger stuff would be nicer though...... hope this helps

i reckon the 1200box willl take the abuse for a while at least, if you want to keep it cheap, just grab a 4speed out of sunny with the a14 in it, it is a stronger version of the same box, i am using one in my road car and it has survived the boosted experiences so far

Yep, a standard gearbox will live behind an A14 ... but not behind a stock A15. It might live behind a 'worked' A15, if it has less low-speed power than a stock engine. Remember, it's not horsepower that breaks things ... it is power/rpm aka torque (twisting force). The higher the rpm the power is made, the less twisting force it has. The lower the rpm the power is made, the more twisting force.

Extending this thread...are the gear ratios of the A12 4 speed the same as the gear ratios of the a15 4 speed.

Reason I ask is I have the choice between an A12, A15 4 speed. (A15 out of an Aussie Sunny) and the A12 out of a 1200 Coupe.

I was wondering if it was worth the trouble of using the A15 box......

Ratios are different for all of them:

56-series 4-speed
60a-series 4-speed
60L-series 4-speed
63-series 4-speed

I think the 1200 gearbox has the 'steepest' 1st gear, meaning the others are closer-ratio.

The standard gearbox is:
1st 3.757
2nd 2.169
3rd 1.404
4th 1.000

The 60L-series has at least two ratio sets:
1st 3.51
2nd 2.17
3rd 1.37
4th 1.00

1st 3.19
2nd 2.39
3rd 1.89
4th 1.00
