hi,
i need some help finding replacement shocks for the front of my '74 120y. the struts are stock but i've put in a set of lowered king springs (1.5inch). i think the shock piston is bottoming out bad or could it be something else? does any1 know where i can get a pair of replacement shocks with a shorter stroke? i've spoken to pedders and their've got their own gas shocks but with the same length stroke. do i need a shorter stroke or just a firmer shock? any help would be much appreciated cheers

Fitting a lower spring is good and as you are saying you want to fit a lowered shock is also good but the length of your strut tube will not allow the lowered shock to reach MAX travel. There is a parts shop up here in Townsville (TOP GEAR AUTO PARTS AND PERFORMANCE, 0747725288) That may be able to help. I was going to lower my 1200 ute which is fitted with 120y struts, and he offered me some lower struts off a voltswagon that fit. BUT you have to shorten your strut tube about 2 inches from memory to fit them and get most benafit from your lowered spring and shock setup. Give them a call and have a chat, he knows plenty if info for setting up a datto for racing. For the record I didnt end up lowering my ute but it good to know it can be done properly, hope this helps.

Gino,
Have you tried thicker oil in the existing struts to stiffen them up? To do it properly you really need to shorten the strut. Pulsar inserts (story) ![]() I think I heard somewhere that early VW Golf shocks are the same diameter also. You can view topic.
