my gearbox has crappy synchro, have to sort of nurse the changes, and hard to shift at high revs without crunching.

It also has a broken tooth on reverse cog, at least thats what Ive been told causes the grinding sound and jumping out of gear sometimes in reverse,.

Am I better off getting it reconditioned, or getting a 2nd hand box, considering that without driving it, it could be as bad or worse than my old one.

what would it cost to recondition, including the reverse cog?

Its an A14 motor and gearbox, dont know the exact g/box number.

Which gearbox does it look like in the pic below? That will tell us if it is 56 or 60 series. Is it 4 speed?Open in new window

If it is the one on the right with ridges on it - it's a 56 series. The middle one is a "smooth case" 4 speed or a 60 series box.

If your curious on the one on the far left is a "stumpy 5 speed" with a CA20 bellhousing attached (for a CA conversion)

Don't stress too much, you should be able to find a second hand box for about the cost of 1 synchro, the first place i would try is right here once we know what part of the world you are from, you will find everyone is quite helpfull and if someone has a box collecting dust they might just part with it.Cheers

... if you're in Adelaide, both U-pull-its have cars with these boxes in them (Sunny, 120Y).
