Hi guys, I was wondering what was a workable solution for switching to rear disc on my 73 coupe. Who's done this & is there a blueprint for the switchover? Everythings out & off the car, is it a bolt on addition or do I need to mod a few things, I could only find one comment on a conversion when I searched. I'm in the US so certain models you guys might of used parts from I might not have access to.

I should clarify - I want to use the standard rearend & housing H145 setup.

Thanks ,Evan

First why discs??? The H145 rear axle tells me that you likely don't have a ton of power in the car and I can tell you that upgrading the front discs on my race car was all it really needed . (I even tend to be the last of the late breakers) I also think the disc set up weighs a bit more than the drum. (??)

As for the actual conversion Maddat as a conversion kit but I believe you still need to fab a couple of pieces.

First, I just wanted to improve braking overall. Didn't think about a ft. upgrade, whats involved in that parts wise & can I still run 12 or 13" wheels. And yes you're right I probably wont have a ton of power although more then stock - I've got a mildly built A12, I say mildly because I dont know exactly whats in it, I didn't do it.its an oval port head, likely A14 head, dual valve springs, modified deeper pan, It was giving to me when I bought a sidedraft weber & canon manifold, the guy was moving & he'd had it for some other project & didn't want to take it with him to Utah. Haven't ran it yet, if its toast I'll rebuild it for bigger power or maybe find an A15 to build.

60A 5 spd. trans & a 4.375 diff to play with.

Thanks for the idea's.

If you are racing a road course and the rear drums are overheating and fading, then a disc upgrade is called for. Otherwise rear discs won't stop any better than the drums. There is no simple, common way to swap them, you will need to build conversion bracket and machining.

all right, I get it now, thanks both of you for the advice & for saving me a lot of effort. I just assumed I'd improve braking substantially by a rear disc upgrade & if in the future I up-ed the power it'd be better equipt to handle it.

Rear disk brake rear end options:

1) Complete rear end off a toyota with disk brakes (corolla)
2) Complete rear end from a Mazda rx7 GSL-SE
3) Complete rear end from a '79 to '83 200SX H165/H190

I went with the 200sx...but I had to narrow the housing, axles and driveshaft end/yoke. Should have went with the Toyota...cheaper LSD!
