heya guys thought i might post up a project thread for my motor that im slowly building up
reason im starting this is so its just a thread about the motor and to allow people to share ideas etc
essentially ill be using an a14 engine with a 1mm over bore along with a heap of goodies
heres the specs ill be trying to get the motor to
it will most likely change in some respects and i will edit it accordinaly
HEAD:
base head: datsun 1974-up gx head (later style)
valves: datsun L series cut down to suit
springs: high spec double valve springs
rocker assembily: yella terra 1.55 ratio
extra info: head will ported mildly, flow tested, chambers reshaped then cc'd to match each other
thats about all i can think of does anyone else have any other ideas?

MOTOR:
block: a14 1mm overbore
crank: std a14 polished, shot peened, balanced maybe take a bit off here and there
rods: std a14 maybe forged Hbeam items if i can find the damned things.. otherwise just polish, shot peen and balance the std ones
pistons: custom made forged items from the US deep dish to take the c/r down to around 8
pushrods: crow cams cromoly items to suit the length they will be needed at
cam followers: maybe some nice lightwieght items from bprojects
cam: unknown till the motors almost finished then will get a custm grind billet
bit of other info:
will be using a full arp stud kit through out the motor
may also "o" ring the block or just use a copper head gasket
oil pump will be a A/L series hybrid for higher volume may also run an oil cooler
cant really think of much else
accerosies:
turbo: garret bb gt30 running around 20-25psi
injectors: 500cc to start off with
throttle body: ford xf item or universal ebay item
turbo manifold: nice lengthy runners curling around everywhere mount the turbo in a nice high and visible position
inlet manifold: nice lengthy full alloy manifold curling over the motor to the otherside of the engine bay
box of sparks: planing on doing a full coil pack system unsure of how to get the crank angle signal might do a hall effect style or maybe keep going with edis...
computer: unsure yet need something to control fuel and spark
thats about all my tired lil brain can think of at the moment ill defiantly add more stuff
feel free to add your opinion etc

Sounds very ellaborate.

I am a fan of the 'square' stroke and bore configuration, that is exactly the arrangement that I have on my A14 in the land of Bananas and Sand.

Littledarkone posted an article about the similarities betweem H beam CA18 rods and the A15 rods, they're closer that I ever imagined. Perhaps you could consider this, although you'd lose the square which I think will yield some awesome results.

In regard to the shot peening, maybe look into Nitriding? I do not know from experience but it does seem to yield a harder, deeper case-hardening. I reckon the A-series cranks are tough as anyway (except the A10 crank!) so unless it is going to be put up to very heavy, continuos load you may get away with a balance and shave.

Oil pump may be safe as well if you're staying below 7000 most of the time, but you'd gain 50% (I think) flow with the conversion, plus it's a very cheap conversion.

How would you expect lag with that turbo? Or how does that turbo compare with a T25?



What is your estimated budget for this engine?



It is a decent, hard thought-out plan but many of your modifications would be much more benficial for high-revving naturally aspirated engines. You are practically building two motors. Sounds good, just remeber you are dealing with an aged pushrod design so your re-sale value would be seriously affected when people can simply go for a stock turbo-charged modern engine.

no good on the lifters, Nismo stopped making them, so the ship sailed..

and rollers no good on a Turbo motor,.. send them to me.. :D

very nice. i'm on a project like that that but i need more info. if u can share where ur gonna buy or bought some of the items will help me a lot.

i'm on the US and Datsun parts are hard to find

there have been a few running t3 turbos
they normally boost at over 3k rpm on not so worked motors

chris im just trying to build the most reliable motor!
ill look into the ca18 rod
and im not planing on selling at anytime
money is pretty much 600 a week going straight to datto stuff (living at home working till i get an aprenticeship)and pretty much knowing the right people to get all the parts from

DAMN NISMO!!!!! so there isnt any stock at all sitting around?

oh and my expected power figures will be up around 180rwkw's
(topgearas basic system made 96rwkw y cant mine make 180??)

I think you should use the 82mm crank
offset ground for 86mm and 76/77mm bores.
(1561cc or 1602cc your choice).
The rod/stroke ratio will be 1.547 like on
hondas, Ford Zetec and late model engines
allowing maximum flow down low making torque,
also less chance of pre-ignition as piston moves
down faster from TDC than on long rod engines.

When boost is concerned for the street
you cant beat undersquare and low rod stroke ratios.
You need torque when not in boost and charge velocity.
Also wear on the sidewalls has recently found is negligeable
when it comes to durability and performance with the right
rings and piston coatings.

For 250hp a GT28RS will be the ultimate and worthwhile investment.

On a different note:
Can you pls post the 2 roof support and plastic filler cover

WOW!180rwkw?? thats a bit optimistic! espeically form the parts list you provided.

When it come to forced induction setups bigger is not always better, for the money you better off going for a CA18 set up.

I'm not saying that 180kws isn't impossible, with the right amount of money anything is possible! maybe a Yatla headworx head might be an idea if you want that sort of power.

I wonder is A-series components would be able to withstand 180+kws?

20-25psi boost on a a14 no matter how strong you build it you will have reliability problems which is going against what you want , as for the 180rwkw does any one know what the most kw ever been put out by one of these motors is ??

There is a 300+hp a-series that the guys from Yatla head worx have built, but it's a bit of a mystery what has been done to the engine internally btu i'm sure everyone will agree it's a powerhouse!!! I think this is the one that brent is baseing his design on with this build.

I would cost litrally an arm and a leg to get someone to build an engine like this. Just lokk at the engine that is being advatised on this forum at the moment, 136Bhp natrally aspriated and it cost thousands to get those numbers, maybe an engine such as this would make 180+kw with a nice, efficent turbo set-up with a well tuned EFI system, Maybe???

In my opinion for the cost of building such an engine for this much power, it might be more cost effective and alot easier to utilise a modern turbo'd, EFI engine such as a E15T or Suzuki swift engine or something similar.
