Hey.

Head studs. WTF!

What are the benefits vs cost?

Is there any need in a street application?

Cheers

and they are harder to strip the thread so you can get them tighter

Absolutely no benefit. Yes, they are stronger than bolts so can be torqued more tightly. But stock head bolts are strong and don't cause any problems.

The studs are called for in high boost turbo street engines.

they arent really that expensive, i got a set for the CA for $200 delivered compared to the stock torque to yeild bolts being $80 non genuine

the advantage of them is that because the stud/bolt is harder than the block it is possible to damage the thread when doing that up as not all the thread is actually being used at the start
whereas with a stud all the thread on the stud in in the block from the moment you start to tighten the nuts on the stud

My comments were intended for A-series engine, as found in Datsun 1200. These engines are not known to strip the threads on stock head bolts.

CA engine may be different. Certainly torque-to-yield bolts cannot be re-used, so in that case you do have to buy something (bolts or ARP studs) when you change the head gaskets.

Thank goodness the A Engine does not use TTY bolts. An original set will last indefinitely.

You don't think a high comp setup would require these studs?

Providing that you don't skimp on a quality head gasket then there is no reason why a good set of standard head bolts won't do a good job. I would use them on a street engine up to 12:1 compression or a turbo engine up to 10 psi.

Oh cool. I didn't imagine I would be up near 11:1 let alone 12:1. I'm glad that's an extra I can cross off the rebuild list.

Cheers peoples.

I run 12.5:1 compression ratio and stick to the Number '13' studs.

These were featured on GX engines and the economy big blocks (A14, A15) and maybe others.

These are higher tensile bolts that suffice for the job and suit my budget.

The conrod bolts however, are ARP bolts. The stock con-rod bolts I would be weary of, but not overly paranoid about in a mild street engine.

Just check you don't have any '13' bolts as they are more common than I had ever realised.
