can any one help with info on an L16 & 5spd conversion?. I have a verry sick 1200 ute ( noisy diff , shot tail shaft , loose gearbox & a slipery clutch). I was thinking of fitting a celica 5 spd to my A14 , because its a good , strong motor, but a tailshaft conversion cost is high . ($470 plus gearbox conversion = tooo many $$$$$) , L16's are a dime a dozzen over here ( West Aust) and I dont have a lot of $$$$$ to spend so I think tihs is a cheep alternitive . Im thinking of using a 1500 diff (re stud axles & drums, otherwise a perfect fit @ no cost) . Tail shaft is sill a mystery, most cars with "A"series motors use tailshafts with non replacable uni joints. As for 1500 's and "L" series vehicles , who knows ???.
Which datto 5 speed? (over driven not 1:1), datto 1500 utes run 4.6:1 gears. what's the best gearbox choice?.
Any help would be greatly apreciated.

tailshaft at $470?, i was told that you could get any tailshaft welded up for about $80 and im pretty sure its balanced. i think you take along two tailshafts with the right uni-joints on them and thay cut them and weld together. or have i been mislead?

Hi rally 1200 the vannete c20 vans have a 4.8:1 diff that bolt into the 1200 ute diff. I have a mitsubishi scorpion diff in my 1200 with a L300 van center 4.625:1 neede a few modsmainly Front wheel drive ofset rims as the diff is a lot wider in track. what kind of diff do you use in your 1200??
The 1500 ute diffs are H190's have huge axles and can find lots of ratios for them including alloy cariers in some models :)
Cheers Andrew

All the L-series cars I've seen have replaceable U-joints. I've heard this about 1200 shafts (non-replaceable) from dimlight65, but I think the B210 shafts will work with A-series boxes and I'd bet those are replaceable. At least here in the USA, I'm pretty sure they are.

i am in the process of building my car and am putting in a 5-speed and therefore was going to use the 4.11:1 ute diff cause i thought that was best i could do, i was also gonna use bluebird disc over drum for four wheel disc effect. i think the 120y shaft doesnt have replacable uni-joints and you also have to be carefull at least in aus cause some 120y's are diffrent cause theve got a borg warner diff

I'm not sure I'm going to be of much help but I'll answer anyway. I took some measurements on an L-series engine for the Chickenhawk (after I had the Z-20 in it) and discovered that the engine I was looking at would have been too tall to fit. The cam being on top of the rockers versus the cam under them, meant the valve cover would have hit the hood. Now, it is pooible that I was looking at an L-20b instead of an L-16 so the lower deck might allow this fitment. I seem to recall that the factory actually had an L-16 1200 called an Excellent. If I'm wrong, feel free to flame my sorry butt!
As for tailshafts, I believe you are correct in that all A-series powered cars had non replaceable U-joints. All of the ones I have seen are, non replaceable that is. I have to difer to tensandtwenties knowledge on the L-series powered cars. Also, there are two different sized input shafts on the A-series cars. There is the small, tiny even, one that was used on the 1200 with a four speed and a larger one that was used on the automatics and later manual transmissions.
As for rear axles, the only experience I have is with B-210 swaps. I have yet to break one even with the Z-20. Mind you, I did weld the spider gears so it isn't a differential anymore. I have done a 200SX axle into a 1200 but have yet to get it on the road.
Now for a five speed, I'd say look for a Z-car if you are going to use the L-16 and a B-310 if you are going to use an A-series.
Um, well, I guess that is all I have. Good luck. Have a day
Tim

I would suggest finding a 280ZX 5spd. It's longer than the regular short tail L boxes but has an 0.76 5th. A nice cruising gear if you're using that 4.6 rear end. What is your average top speed? Here in the states you need to be able to cruise at 70mph+ or you'll get run over. How about where you are? That'll make a big difference in transmission selection I think.

Yes, they did get L-powered 1200's in Japan. But since Japan also got L13's and L14's, it may have been one of those. Plus you'll notice (if you ever see one) it has a nice little bulge in the front to clear the taller valve cover.
