side plug, that how you measure the amount, when it starts pouring out that hole you know you have the right amount of oil in there

Yeah, through the side hole. And plan to clean up a big mess on the floor after you puke the last bit out when it's full.
The easiest way I've found is to run a hose up from the hole to the engine bay. Of course this is where the huge mess happens, all the oil in the hose has to go somewhere after the box is full. Lots of fun.

I use a 0.5 litre metalic seringe (it costs US$15 around here). I use to do it like dimlight but I get tired of cleaning the garage floor.

When I filled mine up just recently I did the thing where you put some tubing in the gearbox and run it up to the engine bay and then slot the end of the catstrol filler thing into the end of the tubing and then put tape aroudn the end to make sure.
Then used blue tack to keep the tube in the gearbox still and turned the oil bottle upside down and left it there for 20 minutes.
And yeah it did cause a little bit of oil to fall out.
I have had two of those syringe things but they all leaked. I love the smell of gearbox oil. Not. Nothing better than it running down the underside of your arm as you lie on your back on the concrete.
I am sure that I jsut bought dodgey brands. But I just gave up looking.

I like the smell of the gearbox oil. However some weeks ago I tooked the diff centre out of the diff case in my garage and since the car was very near to the ground I spent a lot of time on it. I end up trohing up because I was quite intoxicated with the oil vapours.

I am now running a special oil SAE 80-90 for high performance motorcycles and the car seems more loose.

Some of this oils are quite toxic and they can cause skin diseases (like eczema).

Ric.

Also try and have the car fairly level when determing when full because you could over or under fill it depending on which end of the car is raised.
As for the smell of the oil, burnt auto oil is by far the worst.

I disagree. the absolute worst is old or very cheap gasoline. Ironically, some very expensive Elf formula one "rocket fuel" we used in the Formula Atlantic car back in '93, smelled the same. It was so bad that each person on the crew could only fill the car up once per weekend. I remember threatening to quit and walk home from Watkins Glen if asked to do it again. That's a bit more than 1500 miles incidentally.
Bunny!
