I want to move that idler down and in more too. So I can leave more material for the flow passage.

To make it harder as well. The images of the plate on the motor are from Rob and are version 1. The drawing you have is at least version 2.

The drawings you have show that the idler on the right is already very low. There is nothing over the top of the water pump area except the timing belt. How much do you think you can machine out before it gets too thin?

My "shady-as-buggery" drawing shows the positions of the various pulleys as they stand now. The water pump area is already very clear, so machining out a gallery in that area on the back side facing the block should be no issue. (marked in red)

The holes are there to bolt to the existing studs/bolts that are there that normally would hold the standard water pump.

If that is the current layout then no need to move anything.

I I don’t want to go any thinner than 3.5mm on the water passage wall. Looks like there is enough material there to make a decent water passage and leave a sturdy wall too.

Gotta check my paypal but I might have a few coin rattling around to buy some idlers, and a belt. I think I already have the Mazda HTD crank pulley, and might need to machine a cam pulley.

you will need at least

1 x Mazda DA 121 B3 crank pulley - needs to be machined out to suit datsun crank and use spacer busing to position correctly
1 x Dayco KI26 subaru 2.5l tensioner
1 x Subaru Forrester Nason NBT012 idler
1 x dayco T302/94616 timing belt Kia Spectra 2001-2004
1 x Mazda MX5 NB BP8 head timing pulley - used on the datsun camshaft with the adaptor.

The special adapter bushes for the crank and the datsun camshaft I am getting drawn up now. If you wait for them, ill send the image files as well.

Reubs didnt think you needed anything for the crank pulley cog from the Mazda b6
just to open it up to suit the larger diameter datsun A seris crank snout?

Red lines show with idler near the centre of the plate with enough room
for a waterpump of some kind as long as pulley is not too large on it.
Idler could really be a little lower than illustrated.

Blue line shows a short mitsubishi style pump with cog on it which would
need to be compatible with mazda cogs pattern.

Just to note Im using the mazda Z pulleys in the illustration
which are smaller and a little different pattern to the B series
however lighter and would make the packaging more compact again.

The B3 pulley does need to be machined out to suit the datsun crank snout, however it also needs to be spaced out to make everything line up.
Hence the bushing supplied with Robs kit.

Whilst I plan to use the mazda cam timing jigga(CAS) in the back of the head, I may need to move to a 36/1 trigger wheel. The mazda nuts do this for high revving engines as they complain about ignition betting 'scattered'. I may need to go down this path anyways for a couple of reasons. The CAS might not yet fit back there and the Delco ECM is eaiser to setup with a 36/1 toothed wheel.
That ZE/DE toothed wheel looks to be a good solution, however, aftermarket solutions are plentiful and eaiser to get
36/2 tooth ignition wheel

Magna V6 water pump comes with a back housing... I vaguely recall these are remote... but could be wrong ... aybe that was the early 4 cyl ones.
Might be too big also

The Magna waterpump, changed plenty of those over the years for victims
they are massive monsters Neil prob more suitable for irrigating a farm :)

Reubs, great to know you found out it was a spacer for the A pulley!
When I saw a pic of your pulley didnt see any gap there or spacing
so couldnt make that guess at all.

Not clued up on modern engines but this Nissan engine uses the
waterpump like an idler gear with humble contact surface.
Would be good to use something like this then v pulley on crank
only needs to run the alternator and air con at most

Since there is almost halve the material of the alloy used lost
due to the lip for the sump, then the waterpump housing area
can be made with the cavity required for drawing the water
from the primary opening to the waterpump cavity area.
A Sentra pump below could be made to fit and eliminate an idler
making it simple running off the back of the belt.
If not the stock pump could have a pulley with a flat surface
adapted from something else or maybe made up?

Nissan 2.5L sentra pump seems a nice unit and only 27usd new3 bolt design

That sentra water pump looks like a good solution if it can be made to fit.

As long as the impeller can sit deep enough - that would be the thing to check. The plate is about 10mm thick from memory, so even if you cut out the right size hole, and impeller may not sit deep enough in the water travel way.

Perhaps, rather than bolting over the top, you recess the front of the plate down to say 5mm for the bolts and cut out enough for the impeller to sit in the water way.

Im still keen to use an electric water pump - for everything expect for race cars, and mega boost stuff it should be fine.
But I do like the idea to recess out the back of the plate to allow water to flow correctly as intended in the datsun block

Reubs did you see the cheap VW Audi waterpump? its pretty cheap at under 30usd new.

If possible the less parts the better so if a pump can work as the idler as well
then it will all be more compact as well and neater. The sentra pump pulley is
just an example and there are others but Nissan qr25 is common for parts.
