The large mark should be top dead center. If you have a distrubitor that has advance marks like the ones in the states, just align the large mark up with the pointer and advance
your timing to the desired amount.

Each Mark is 2 degrees.
You know, if your car is running bad,
it probably isn't the timing.
Your motor should run pretty reasonable
with the timing set anywhere
from 15 degrees
to a couple of degrees afteR TOP DEAD CENTER. Here's what you do,
with your motor running
turn the distributor either way
until it starts to miss,
then turn it back the other way
until it starts to miss,
then turn it back half way,
tighten it up
and drive it.
If everything else is OK
your car should run like a champ.
If it runs good
then get back to me
and I will detail you
in how to do the static timing.
It is all easy,
you just have to get your hands dirty
and think about it.
Do not get frustrated.
Take time to understand.
If that don't clear it up,
get back to here
and we can try something else.
Either way,
let me know how you progress.

Mareo is correct,Do you have a vacuum gauge?I would find one if you have set the timing and the engine still runs rough. If the needle is not steady then there is
something truly wrong, keep working on it.

sounds like you have a pulley from a 71 1200 and a front cover from a 73 1200. The deep grove on the pulley should line up with o mark on the front cover for top dead center. the 71
had 5 marks on the pulley and one mark on the front cover. The 73 had a single grove on pulley and five marks on the front cover with corrisponding degrees marked on the cover.
