Keys on some 1200s in some markets are matched: One key opens all doors as well as operates the ignition. In other markets there is a different key for the ignition. Also there are left-hand and right-hand keys that otherwise look identical.

Usage
1972 USA Owners manual (see pages 3-4 for key information): |
Key Types
All Datsun 1200 used a VOSS double-sided (reversible) Nissan Motor key.
Early models with optional steering lock used a VOSS single-sided oval key for the ignition. So these 1200s used two keys:
The use of one-key-fits-all or two keys depended on the model, year and country:
- USA 1971 sedan: 2 different keys
- USA 1971 coupe: single key
- USA 1972-1973: single key
OVAL KEYS
Early 1200 models with optional steering lock used an oval key for the steering column.
VOSS KEY00-00034/VH1000 single-sided
VOSS-type keys (KEY00-00034) were made by Kanto Seiki under license of VOSS of Germany. These were used starting around 1969. The former WASO type (KEY00-00028) were made by Kanto Seiki under license of WASO of Sweden. The only real difference is the length. The VOSS keys are shorter, which means WASO key won't fit in the VOSS cylinder. The longer VOSS keys should never be used in a WASO cylinder, as it may lock the steering incorrectly.
Nissan Motor Keys
All Datsun 1200 used VOSS Double-sided keys with the "Nissan Motor" text and "N" symbol. These fit the dash ignition switch, doors, boot and fuel filler lid locks. Also, later 1200s with steering lock used this key instead of the oval key.
VOSS double-sided newer shape used in JDM (Sunny Truck) and SADM (Bakkie)

Dimensions
Length
Nissan keys come in various lengths. The original Datsun 1200 keys were the short length.
- Short: ~31 mm groove length
- 2.0 inch overall
- Original 1200 reversible key length
- Medium: ~38 mm groove length
- 2.4 inch overall
- Used by Datsuns & Nissans 1974-1981, Subaru, and Mazda Cosmo
- Long: ~46 mm groove length
- 2.7 inch overall
Width
Width is 8.9 mm at the point where the grooves start.
Width of the teeth area is 7.1 mm
Center groove width: 2.3 mm
Outside groove width: about 1.0 mm minimum (some keys have it machined all the way out, that is to say a wider groove)
Right-Handed vs Left-Handed
The reversible key came in left-hand and right-hand versions.
KEY00-00035 left groove (Datsun 1200)
2nd groove is left of center groove
2nd groove is right of center groove
Aftermarket Keys
Two styles were used (center, right). The newer, longer one (left) will work, but is not the original style.
The little groove diagrams below the photos are for the keylock, so they are the reverse of the actual key.
WARNING: The first key is right-handed, while the second is left-handed. Each key comes either way. Be sure to purchase the correct one for your 1200 locks.
Interesting that some 1200s (newer utes?) came with two different keys originally. The 1971-1973 north american models came with single key for ignition, doors and trunk.
Oval Single-Sided Nissan Ignition Key
This is the earlier style for 1968-1971 Datsun, Mazda before the double-sided keys were used. This was used by 1971 USA 1200.

Key Code
When your key gets worn down too far, making a copy results in a poorly-working new key. Instead, have a new key cut from the original key code.
- In Australia, the key cut number was stamped directly into the original keys
- Additionally, the code may be stamped on the right-side door lock cylinder. Remove the door panel to get at the clip which holds the lock in.
- Not necessarily stamped on left-side door lock, nor trunk/boot lock, nor ignition lock
In USA, the key cut number was penciled onto the inside of the glove box door:
- VF: for VOSS single-side KEY00-00034
- mine is marked "1", possibly to indicate my locks are a single-key system
- VH: for older (pre-Datsun 1200) WASO KEY00-0028
- Eng*/DOOR: 4-digit key code
Codes
- In the range of (M)5001-(M)6000 (or N) for reversible KEY00-00035/KEY00-00055
- range 4001-5000 is for mirror image keys (non-Datsun 1200)
Non-1200 Keys
WASO Oval Keys
Use only VOSS type for Datsun 1200
Single-Cut Keys
Do not confuse Datsun 1200 keys with these single-sided VOSS keys. They also had "Nissan Motor" text and "N" symbol, but were used by earlier models e.g. Datsun Roadster.
