- | Simple method: cut just below the fulcrum pin in the round part. Then just weld in a piece of 3-4mm steam pipe 1 - 1.5 inches long then weld the fulcrum back on top. On the stick cut the bottom off and exten it the same amount and then weld the ball back on. | + | A short-throw shifter is longer below the fulcrum, so you only need the move the shifter a little to move the gears a lot. |
+ | Of course if the fulcrum is higher up on the shifter, you need to move the fulcrum mount point on the transmission up higher to match. | ||

- | Pro method: Angelo made the adapter and stick to move the fulcrum point up about 1.25"/31.75mm. The stock shifter moved about 6-7" from 1st to 2nd, now it moves only 3". Side to side movement is still the same as before. It has taken me a few days to get used to. The throw is so short, it's difficult to go from second to third and from fourth to fifth. Tap the original holes for the fulcrum pin with an M10x1.5 and used short flathead/countersunk M10 screws to mount it. | + | == Simple Method == |

But 60-into-63 might work in a pinch. |

The 3-speed used a column shifter attached to the steering column. 4-speeds and 5-speeds use floor shift mechanism that is integral to the transmission itself.

Overview
By POST government decree the shift pattern must be displayed in view of driver. This is normally printed on the shifter knob.
You can also print it out and tape it to the dash "in view of the driver".
Shift Knobs
Shifter Bushes
The bushings become dry rotted, broken. New ones restore your shifter for tight, precise shifting again.
I got tired of the shifter in my 1200 flopping around, so I changed the bushings --it took about 5 minutes. I don't know what happened to the old bushings, I didn't see any in there at all. It was nice and tight last year, but one day it just started flopping. I reckon the old ones shattered into a million pieces. Anyways, for 5 minutes and 5 dollars, it sure works better now.

"Head" bush at the end, regular bushes on the side of the hole
If you have carpeted tunnel, pull it out, to prevent grease from getting on it.
If you have a console, remove it. Two Phillips screws on each side, 4 total
Floor boot -- pull the boot up
Transmission boot -- pull the small boot up
Using a small screwdriver, snap the E-clip off the pin. Some transmissions have a 10mm nut instead.
Disintegrated Shifter Bushings -- looks like sludge, but is actually the remains of the plastic bushings, mixed with gear lube.
Wipe off the shifter and push the new bushings into place;
Metal Bushes
Stock type plastic bushes VS Racing aluminum bushings for better control (but they transmit vibration)
Shorty Lever
2 inches cut out of the stock 1200 shift lever
Short-throw Shifter
A short-throw shifter is longer below the fulcrum, so you only need the move the shifter a little to move the gears a lot.
Of course if the fulcrum is higher up on the shifter, you need to move the fulcrum mount point on the transmission up higher to match.
Discussion: How to make a short shifter
Simple Method
Lengthen the shifter bottom section: cut just below the fulcrum pin in the round part. Then just weld in a piece of 3-4mm steam pipe 1 - 1.5 inches long then weld the fulcrum back on top. On the stick cut the bottom off and exten it the same amount and then weld the ball back on.
Or instead of modifying the 56/60-series shifter, use an L-series shifter (which has a higher fulcrum).
To modify the transmission, bolt extension plate on the shifter brackets:
Pro Bracket
Angelo made the adapter and stick to move the fulcrum point up about 1.25"/32mm.

63/71 Shifter
63-series and 71 series already have a higher fulcrum point. Some later 71-series are adjustable for low- or high- fulcrum.

Interchange
These all interchange. Bends/length differ.
- 56-series shifter
- 60-series shifter (both 4 & 5-speeds)
The 63-series 5-speed shifter fits deeper into the transmission, so does not interchange. CONVERSELY, the 60-series shifter does not work well with the 63-series 5-speed, as the length of the shifter from the crossbolt to the plastic pivot point at the end of the shifter is about 10mm shorter. But 60-into-63 might work in a pinch.
The B310 floor boot is different:
