Here's my progress so far.  I did this all by hand.  Next time I'll have a pro do it :)  I stripped the paint, sanded from 150-1000 grit, and started buffing with Tripoli compound.  Needs more work (more buffind and final polish) and it looks better in the pic than it does in person.  Could be worse I suppose.

Looks good but what are you going to do to keep the rust away?

I'm thinking of trying Glisten PC by the POR-15 company. It's not cheap but in my experience they make very good products that do exactly what they say it'll do. Here's a link to their product page for this clear coat: Glisten PC But I'm also open to suggestions.

Am I right in thinking the Datsun stamped ones only came in 1000's & 1200's - 120Y & later all were Nissan ones?

 Re: valve cover polishing
Yeah I looked through the galleries here and didn't see any covers marked "DATSUN" but I'd sure love to have one if there are some. Probably hard to come by if they were only used for a few years.

So far I've spent about $50 on sandpaper, buffing compunds, cloths etc. And it'll be another $50 more for the top coat I want to use. I could have taken it to a local polishing shop for $125 - plus save me a lot of time. On the other hand I'll have a lot of supplies left over so if I keep using them maybe I'll come out ahead (except for the sore arms and hands!!). Maybe I'll try to polish up my GX manifold :) I'll have to start out probably with 60 grit or so to really smooth it out.

Looks good mate.
Don't VHT make a heat proof clear coat paint? Might be worth checking out.

the original motor in my 120y sedan was a datsun one, it is a crossover 74\75 model though.
