As the ignition key is turned to "OFF", current will not flow through the solenoid, causing the fuel passage for the slow circuit to close. This in turn shuts down teh engine without "dieseling."
Whevenever a solenoid is defective, replace it as an assembled unit.

Just a 50 RPM change is difference between running-on and stopping cleanly:

North America specs
1972 A12 manual: 700 rpm
1973 A12 manual: 750 rpm

1972 A12 automatic: 600 rpm in drive
1972 A12 automatic: 650 rpm in drive
