that is very interesting, I suppose if you were heading down the turbo big block A series (or Hi Po atmo) you could use them. Plus they look pretty cool

Wow, a new engine to add to the A-series doner list.

Question: If they are more or less the same, why use them? A14/A15 rods are plentiful and strong.

Re: ca18 rods with a14 rods
the standard ones are more or less the same but these are HIGH TENSILE 4340 FORGED STEEL
HARDNESS OF HRC33-38
DOWELED CAP FOR PRECISION ALIGNMENT
X-RAY & SONIC TESTED, QUENCHING AND HEAT TREATED,SHOT PEENED, 100% MAGNAFLUXED
SILICON BRONZE BUSHINGS FOR FLOATING PISTON,WRIST PINS ,ARP 2000 CAP SCREW BOLTS

(sorry about the caps i just cut and paste from the add)
when you work it out you are not paying that much more if you needed to buy new rods and arp bolts plus these arp bolts are larger than a-series arp bolts

spool rods

yes a14 crank and the piston in the pic is a venolia forged unit (should have about 13 to 1 comp ratio)

the weight difference is 7 grams heavier

So just to get it straight....the conrods have identical dimensions? Including big end bearing diameter? Looks really close to identical in the photo!

Re: ca18 rods with a14 rods
big end on both is 48mm
big end width 0.20 narrower

it is only the piston pin that needs to be bushed from 20mm to 19mm (it is bushed already). length is the same

Re: ca18 rods with a14 rods
Ah, I understand now. Since the A14 rod is quite a bit lighter, it would be a good swap into a CA16 or CA20 engine.

For a CA18DET, the heavier stronger rod would be preferred.

Re: ca18 rods with a14 rods
i would not consider 7 grams quit a bit and the standard rods would be fine for a downdraught weber pritty much stock engine(if you want your stocker to rev to 8000)

but if you prefer a faster and more reliable engine (as aposed to a faster engine that is likly to pop a cap of a rod and f#ck a $1300
set of pistons not to mention strech at hi rpm and bend valves and pushrods).
then 7 grams is a small price to pay for peace of mind and hey the pistons are 12 grams lighter anyway not to mention the kilos missing from the flywheel and cranck. the fact is you get what you pay for and fast and reliable engines aren't cheap,

the only reason i posted this topic was to inform the more adequate engine builders of the option when building a hi po engine.

bump
Any information on your build?
eg. purpose, head type used and
results of using 13.1 comp (methanol?)
