My buddy reversed out of a parking without looking, straight into a moving Opel Astra. Quite a few bobs worth of damage here.

However since our authorities are absolutely only interested in prosecuting people for speeding, I've seen people do illegal, stupid and weird things to their cars, and get away with it. I have this theory that you could basically do anything you want, disobey every rule of the road, and generally go crazy, as long as you're not speeding while you're doing it you'll be alright...

I do agree with you.

Do the speed cops here in South Africa even know that these laws exsist.

Its this the standard GX diff you are talking about, because it has to be a good diff if it can handle 195hp without stripping.

I personally think this would looks wicked with flares. Ill suggest it to him while he is having the UTE repaired.

He does not want to shorten the diff anymore than it is, I have told him it looks tappet, but he is thickheaded, he likes it like that. Well, its his van.

The reason why he has this diff installed is because he stripped the origanal on a drag strip.

I'm starting to think that I'm extremely lucky, that my diff might have innards that are far stronger than standard, or that people just don't know how to launch. I've now been driving my car with the original diff(if it had the original when I got it) and it's not even whining or making funny noises yet. I left it in, because I wanted to see how long it lasts before it strips, breaks or the side shafts lets go. It just doesn't break, even with the 195hp on the wheels as per my dyno sheet, can anyone explain this to me?

But let me not tempt fate...

the laws over here wouldn't allow it mate, as it is increasing the track of the vehicle too far. it's all in the NCOP pages from the national vehicle gov department.

Are you serious? Still the h145? I thought you changed to a h165 that the bakkies have. Damn, then I am surprised it still holds.According to everyone here it is a $hit diff that can't handle power very good.

If you actually take the time to read the guidelines clearly. You can infact legally do many things that internet forums often state you can not legally do.

Example Page 38 " Track"
If you fit another assembly, the track width will now go off the particular assembly and its original manufacture specified track.
However if you simply fit a wider diff like above it will still be illegal unless the tyres tread is covered.

Every modification that you do to a vehicle, will also lead to numerous other design rules being required to be implimented.

Wheel Track design rules are there to simply prevent stupid modifications like, wide wheels and silly offsets being fitted to hubs and bearings that will eventually fail as a result of various loads on an undersized component.

The same rule basically applies here, your wheels are not to protrude further beyond the body panels than I think it was 20mm or a percentage of the tyre width. You have to put on flares if you wanted to do that.

 Re: Rear ended
Get the diff shortened again to the same length as the standard diff.(He could have actually kept the original diff in.They are strong buggers) and SLAM it to the ground with a dropped suspention.

 Re: Rear ended
The wheels alway stick out like that. The UTE has a diff from a Nissan 2.4 1tonner UTE, which is wider than this one. The person that shorten the diff did not cut it enough. Second reson is that it has deep dish rims on it, if we install flat faced rims, the rims go under the fender. See pics below:
He was reversing slowly, the Astra was ay speed.
