Warm engines wear much slower than cold ones. I wonder If using one of these would mean you could run it hard straight away? Is this a jdm thing?

Naw, this is a "official" Datsun USA Accessory part. They are mostly used in extreme cold climates, e.g. Alaska and Minnesota where temps can reach -40 F (below freezing temperature of anti-freeze).

Although in mountain areas everywhere they are occasionally used. Maybe even in Australia -- does who_your_datty_1200 have one in his Snow Cruiser?

nah.. never seen one in Australia. Our snowy mountain rarely get below -10. Nothing like Minnesota.

Although I was once in Minnesota for work at -40degC and the 2003 Chevy Cavalier started everytime. I could pull on the handbrake, turn the front wheel full lock and floor it in reverse to 'spin out' of my parking spot on the icy/snowy concrete. A couple of times, I had to wait for the ice sheet on the inside of the windscreen to clear before I could drive anywhere. The lake would form in the rubber snow mats in the foot wells. That's crazy living there in winter.

NO, Blair (WYD1200) doesn't have one. There are only a few (habatable) parts of NZ where you would need one. Last winter on the news they showed one godless sh1t hole where the diesel was freezing in peoples utes and stuff.
There used to be a kid down the road from me growing up, who's dad had a T-bird which he used to plug in. Kind of a wank really, when you consider it was warm enough to run around in bare feet.

for use in a cold climate. Obviously you fit it into one of the welch plugs so it sits in the coolant, & when it's below freezing, you turn it
on to heat the coolant before starting. Or maybe you keep it turned on all night so the coolant doesnt freeze & split the block.
