 Re: My Truck
I got a phone call this morning(8/8/04).

"HELP WE ARE STUCK IN MUD"

So at 930 am I jump in the truck and off to get some mates out of the shiit. They were stuck up to there axels in clay and it took us about 2 hrs to get to them from my home and another 2 1/2 hrs to get them out of the clay. As the track was cut up pretty ruff going back was not an option, so we just carried on. Finally got out and we had droped in on the Mackenize Country with a storm following us. The only way out was to go through an old alpine pass to Lake Tekapo and this was where I took the picture with the storm behind us.

Got home about 8 pm tonight!!!!

So much for working on Monty.

Woody.... If you knew as much as you post, then you would know why I have a real 4WD. Jeeps are nice and all, but have you every look at the wiring or there 4WD tranfer case??? Nah I didnt think so. It may work well in the dust and sand of the outback, but over here they just get bogged!!!! I know as I have seen it happen time and again on 4WD trips. Jeeps just cant handle the jandel!!! So go away and get a real life. If you want to insult me come over here and do it to my face and then see what happens!

Mate you should have seen the mud/clay. They got stuck going hill, as I would have if I was following them when they got there. But as I arrive later on, they had set up a track for me to get in front of them, so I could pull them out, plus having chains on the front wheels helps a helll of alot!!

 Re: My Truck
hey hey hey, my jeep dont go out in sand and dust, we do mountains, and CLAY, and MUD and rocks. if u have ever had a look under the bottom of a 3B u would no that they are magnificent in mud, they have stuff all to gte caught up on apart from the diffs, and u cant stop that unless u got independent, my jeep is pretty well stok apart from a 3 inch lift, an overdrive, and a 4.1 250 falcon, we have been 4WDriving with all kinds of four wheel drives, wether it be a TJ or WJ jeep or a landcruiser suzuki or nissan, we come out on top, they have all the ####, diff locks, whinch's everything! but on climbs, on rocks, in mud, theres not much that can go were we go, but mate i'll let u think ur cruiser is better than an old skool jeep ( new ones are ####) becoz one day u will most probly come across a well set up jeep and be gob smacked to see how well they really do preform, hell, they won the war! without jeeps we would have lost!

Well,
1st have you ever gone 4WDing in NZ??? And I dnot think that you should go and make bold statements about my 4WD, as you know nothing about it.

2nd 4WDing comes down to one big thing. How you drive it! Not what you drive, so I dont think that my truck is the best you can get, I can just drive it!!!

 Re: My Truck
yeh mate i agree with u there, its all about how u drive it and where u place ur wheels, and no i havent been 4WDrivin in New Zealand, but yeha, i no that the new jeeps are #### house and are for nancy's but any CJ is good off road ( im biased and i say 3B's are the best of the CJ's )
but sum toyotas go alright off road, but it all depends on how much balls the bloke driving it is, if he has enuf balls to care about rolling or hitting a tree etc.. thats what is so gr8 but the jeep, who gives a fark!

All this is from a bloke who declared in another thread that he was 14 years of age.

Between 1980 & 1994 i was the district fleet manager for Telecom with my office in Goulburn. My client area took in all the snowfields out of Cooma as well as a lot of areas where it just plain snowed. We had, during those 14 years, a good size fleet of Cruisers, a smattering of Patrols, a couple of Land Rovers & a Jeep.

I got to see their whole life histories, as i approved, & signed for, every cent that was spent on maintainance & repair. I pulled on my overalls & helped take a few of them apart, & i can tell you that, from a professional standpoint, the others did not hold a candle to those wreched Toyotaaargh's. If driven with reasonable care, you couldn't kill 'em with an axe.

The service backup through the dealership network was second to none, & being a fleet operator, the factory rep was only a phone call away.

The Jeep is a lovely show pony, & as a Mopar man, i'd love to own one, but as a workhorse, the cruiser was second to none. [dammit]

Hmmmmmmm 14???? I think that its shows!!!

As for the truck and other cruisers, what motors did they run?? Mine has the 13BT 24volt, so it has a weeee bit more kick than some others of its age. It wont do more than 130 kph, cos it has been geared down to work better off road.

In the early days, [early 80's] our cruisers ran petrol engines, but any cylinder head over 80,000k [50,000 miles] was living on borrowed time.

The valve seat recession had to be seen to be believed. These things drank fuel like there was no tomorrow, but soldiered on regardless.

Somewhere along the line, the higher up's got the massage & the pushrod deisels were supplied as replacements. Not as fast or quick as the petrol models, they were good solid workhorses, but for christ sake, do not ever get water onto the air inlet. I lost two engines in the same creek crossing a week apart. We rebuilt one engine from the two using three rods from each engine [hydraulic lock is a killer] & i had to source a second hand engine from a wrecker to fix the other.

Later the six cyl. OHC engines showed up & were popular. We also had three of the four cylinder diesels, & while they went anywhere we wanted them to, they just took a while longer to get there. These were all based in Jindabyne, [NSW] so the mountains & altitude slowed them even more.
We got our moneys worth out of them all.

The one Jeep we had was a petrol model with a Pickup body. It worked well enough, but the only dealer at the time was in Canberra, so service was a problem, & it cost a lot more to keep it on the road. This was before Chrysler bought them, so it was an American Motors Jeep.

The Land Rovers. Don't even think about them. Costly to keep, no dealer in the area, dreadfully slow. Lucas electrics. Glad to see the last one go.

See the black thing going up the side of the truck, its a snorkel. I got it just for that reason. When we go on a 4WD trip there is usually a couple of rivers to cross and most of the time the water is coming over the bonnet.

The F series petrols (1f, 2f, 3f), in my opinion whilst drank fuel like it as going outa fashion, were just about bullet proof. A good buddy had a 3F (OHC i think) in a 70 series, and with a set of headers, exhaust, and 500cfm holley, went like the clappers. When he had it dyno tuned, it aparently had similar torque figures to a 350 chev!!
As far as life span goes, well, I have never owned one for that long, ( I havent been around long enough ) but they seem to last well enough. He was a car destroyer, and even when it had burnt a valve, and it was only running on 4 cylinders, it still pulled 3rd gear burnouts with ease!!!
The BJ series diesels (4cyclinder) in my opinion worked great in the 40 series, especially if you could get on from a coaster as the cam was changed to provide more torque, but were slow and never were HP monsters. I had a friends who every now and then the cold start would stay on and by jingoes would it go till it switched off!!

The H series diesels were slow and overweight, and not until the 1HZJ models were they any good, but basically unkillable. The 2H was only a minor improvement over the original H motor.
With the introdction of the multivalve diesels in the mid 90s, saw incrediable HP and tourque figures for a diesel, then Tojo dropped it in favour of a V8 petrol! Dumb, but they wised up and changed back.

Nissans diesels were not much better with the SD33/35 bieng slugs, but bullet proof. Even bieng a nissan man thru and thru, the Tojos do have a superior vehicle over all. mechanically yes, confort, well thats debateable.

 Re: My Truck
The 3b/13bt motor is one of the strongest motors out there. I used to own a BJ 42(SWB 3B) and it was a great truck to start in, but I needed a 5speed and some comfort. The truck has nice sits elec windows blah blah, but if this one ever shiits its self I am going to chuck in a quad cam lexus V8, as the conversion is piiss easy to do just have to make up new mounts and get an adaptor plate made!!!!

I know diesels have great tourque, but I want the grunt of the V8!!!

 Re: My Truck
I'm for the patrols (for better or worse) since my family owns 2...
Not too sure about the earlier models, but i know the later models ('90 on) the drive train is sooooooo much stonger than the tojo. downside is it makes it weigh an extra half a ton or so, which is noticeable on acceleration etc.

I know of someone that jumped a dune in one, 2 metres air at the front, and about a metre at the back. yes he broke something, the engine mounts. grabbed a couple chains and padlocks, and chained the motor back in. (and apparently drove around like that for a couple years)

I must say one of my favourite 4wds was a HJ45 ute/trayback, owned by one of dads mates. It had a 6.5 litre chev v8 turbo diesel.... who said diesel's can't do burnouts?????

The only thing that I dont like about patrols is the fact that they are wider in there track and there fore offen "pop" out of the rutts, but other than that they do go hard!!!!

I'm pretty sure that the V10 dodge rams are availble in a 4WD. I reckon that one of those could run over the top of most things. All the new V8 jeeps have mercedes engines, so why would you bother?

Mind you those little suzukis are dam good little climbers, so long as you dont try and run over anything too big (gound clearance.

Well I doubt that many people have the experience that yo have dodgeman with reguards to fellt vehicles.

I work in the mining industry and Considering the conditions that the tojo are subjected to, I would agree with you time and time again. I havent found a mining company that uses jeeps in any application, and very few use nissans. As a workhorse, the japs know how to make mean machine.
I too have a thing for the old style jeeps. My dad had a cj5 with a 318ci in it which was great fun, and it did alright off road, but i would still take that jap-crap anytime.

In the end, like it has already been said, its more about the driver then the car, but in a workhorse senario, tojos win hands down.

We've got a '89 mahindra cj3 (indian copy) on our farm and although build quality is sh#@house, it'll go anywhere offroad, a lot better than our raised swb pajero. Never driven a cruiser, but all our neighbours swear by them.
