Not alot of room to throw bigger donks in here, like Dodgeman said, but looking forward to cleaning it all up and hiding most of what you can see here |

Re: Engine bay Despite their British origin, these are actually a good engine. Obsolete in design & heavy for the capacity, but good none the less & will respond well to some modest tuning.
I have seen a J15 in a Datsun 520 with mild cam, single sidedraught Weber & very nicely made extractors & it gave a very good account of itself out there in the ashphalt jungle. Not a screamer, it still sounded very good & revved out clean & crisp all the way to it's realistic limit.
It sure surprised me.

Re: Engine bay She's getting a rebuild later in the year, and I've got a set of sidies to pop on there when she's done, should run quite well I hope.

Re: Engine bay A 'set' of sidies? There are only two inlet ports but a 'set' of sidies has 4 throats.
Unless you are going for the big power outputs from a 3 bearing engine I would suggest that even a 36DGA/V might be pushing it as these will flow more than these can consume untill you start geting into the 'BANG' zone & the downdraught carb has ported vacuum, but the sidedraught models do not. [important in cruise mode] Actually, a pair of SU's would probably be the best choice for this.
The tweaked J15 that I wrote of previously used a bigger displacement, just one Weber, & had a cam to go with the induction, exhaust & modified head & even then, was redlined at less than 6,000.
If you want to pep up a J series, see if you can find a J15 to start with.

Re: Engine bay Hey dodgeman, what your looking at is a J15. The carbs I was refering to are a set of HS6 SU's that I found, should have been more specific sorry, Not sure how it'll turn out yet, but looking forward to trying.

Re: Engine bay I have thought long and hard about the A series road, and I prefer to keep it the way it is for several reasons. Cost: Although I have several A series motors to install, the car is currently column shift and I'd need to cut a hole in the floor or make a complicated linkage for the top loading boxes, as I believe the A series motors dont quite match the J series gearbags, the clutch on this one is hydraulic and I need to convert to cable, or run a different box from the 56A's that I have, and mounts would need to be fabricated as well as a new exhaust and prop shaft modifications. Also the diff would need to be changed to get the full benefits, as the H190 thats there at the moment has an extremely short ratio. Time: As this is my daily driver, it would inconvenience me to take it off the road for long enough to convert. Having just had my second son, I wouldn't like to leave the wife at home with no wheels after I take hers to work. Originality: Nothing needs to be said on this subject. As everything there works great at the moment, and is already matched quite well to each other I'm disinclined to fiddle too much. Thanks for the suggestions though.
