can the engine go down at all? i know that was the problem with unfams one, it was mounted too high and further back than normal so the clutch fork was hitting the tunnel

The newer engines mount about 1" too high, compared to the 1967-1973 engine.

Ideally you want to modify the engine-mount bracket to lower it down. Cut and weld, or slot the brackets.

But then the Datsun 1000 transmission didn't have a clutch fork, did it?
