'67 1000, worse for wear, leads a Mini through The Dipper.

the cars were numbered 1 & 2,& car no 2 won the class, with car 1 3rd in class.look closely, those cars are 2 door sedans.woohoo.car 2 was driven by roxburgh/whiteford,while car 1 was the kamakazi special, being driven by takahashi & oishi.there's a photo of one of the japanese drivers coming into the dipper,& it looks very committed (banzai).this was a problem with a lot of the japanese drivers, who drove way out of their skin, because the place intimidated them.

The caption that came with the photo says that the Datsun 1000's came first & second in class "A", yet your info seems to say that they came first & third, unless the second place getter was disqualified.
What gives i wonder.

They are two door sedans because the only bodies produced for the 1967 model year were the aforementioned two door sedans & the van. Commercial car models were not eligible to enter, besides, the standard two door was the lowest priced, lightest & strongest, so even after the four door became available, it was not used as it had nothing to offer performance wise.

Even after the coupe was added for the '69 model year, the extra 4 hp that it produced was not enough to make up for it's extra weight. It does look good though.

Now, who's going to be the first to do a Bathurst replica?

chris, the reason for the 1st & 2nd claim was that all 3 works corollas were originally disqualified for illegal engine parts, but one car was reinstated after a successful protest,& was awarded second in class.mind you,the 2nd & 3rd placed cars both did 116 laps,so it was close run.don't forget, those corollas came with 3k engines with a whole extra 100 cc's.that extra capacity was worth an extra 4 mph in top speed, according to the 1969 race report.must have been fun running side by side down conrod.

I guess when you are flat out, that 4mph is a lot, particularly when you are running along a long straight, like conrod. I wonder just how high the panic level got, when they went under brakes at the end of that wonderfull, pre chicane, downhill straight. Those drum brakes must have just about glowed from the heat.

I remember watching [on TV] many a car head for the escape road, while a few more rolled while making the turn at the bottom at a speed to high to handle. Vauxhall Vivas had to be the classic here & i remember seeing two of them [diferent years?] tip over, & watched in horror as the roofs were flattened to the body line on the drivers side. Fortunately, no major injuries, but god only knows why not.

After seeing that for the first time i swore that i would never ride in one of those things, ever, & i never have.

Hey B310GX, can you tell us what the race car numbers were for the Datsun 1000 in '67. This is race number 2. Is this the actual class "A" winner?

Like the '68 racer, this one also has a single bullet mirror on the door. It also has some rubber bonnet hold downs. Now they aren't standard.

Thanks ddgonzal

Caption from the photo reads:Quote:
DATSUN 1000s won first, second and third places among 42 world's best cars in the tough Japanese Rally in July, first and second places among 64 world's best automobiles in the Class A devision of the gruelling Gallaher 500 Australia Race. So when you ride DATSUN 1000, you are riding a world champion that gives you championship performance.

If they removed the bumpers and drivers had empty stomachs they probably would have won class B also.
Pity we cant get Japanese footage of the Japan rally and shizuoka races in 69.
My old friend in Japan was surprised of these little critters as it was the only car he could afford in 67. He said in standard trim it beat many more sophisticated cars even several datto 1600s in the 69 race.
It did it with the a10 thorughout their race life till 1974 in Malayasian Grand Prix.
The 1200 gx engine was never allowed in one and neither was the L14 Twin Cam.
