Race Car Build Day 3 front suspension

| Here are the front struts I bought from Dattodude...They are 200B with Tokiko inserts and adjustable lower collars. Currently it has std 1200 springs and std 200B GX brakes (with alloy Girlock Calipers), but once the car is together I will take it to John Taylor who will drill a new mounting hole in the x-member 45 degrees and 20mm from original, and also he will shorten the strut and bend it to give 4.5 degrees camber, as well as modify the front arm to give 10 degrees of castor. |

I have my 1200 ute stripped down at the moment, and have a 200B that i used for the running gear, and could use those struts. How much work is it? would it cost me any extra? (I'm a student... and broke)

Re: Race Car Build Day 3 front suspension mmm..I know they are definately alot thinker and therefore stronger, the lower swing arm needs to be swapped to stanza and it will all bolt in OK. I think its alot easier getting the 200B struts over Stanza however the springs, and spring retainers are alot wider and will need to be cut off and the 1200 spring retainers welded back on. The Stanza struts dont require this mod.
But you should be able to get 200B GX struts and brakes from a wrecker for $50-$80 pair in good nick.

Re: Race Car Build Day 3 front suspension where are you getting these numbers from? they sound prety redical. I have been told the dattos need castor for stability but not to go much higher than 6deg because it will just make the steering heavy and wont help much more. And with the camber, Im running 2.5 and would like to go to 3ish but again there is a point where it stops helping and become detramental surely 4.5 or higher will just mean youll be shrinking the size of tire on the road, or am I being conservative ( my car is set up for the track and I currently race it).

Re: Race Car Build Day 3 front suspension Suspension setup depends very much on what type of tyre you use. In Improved Production racing over here we have to use a radial tyre, the Yokohama A032R. To get them to last 12 laps of a trophy race you need to run alot of camber or you'll simply overheat the outside of the front tyres, your times will drop off, and you'll wear out your tyres. The front running cars use up to 8 degrees camber!

Re: Race Car Build Day 3 front suspension I agree L18.... most of the guys we run with have at least 4degrees camber.... most are between 5 and 6.5.
On the castor though, 10 degrees seems like a lot. 6-8 degrees I would think should be plenty.

Re: Race Car Build Day 3 front suspension yeah them radials love camber....10 degrees castor will probably feel really bad dude, unless you're using trick offset steering arms, a-la 240RS or BMW M3...
now i'm back using crossplies, I'm more or less running road car settings again.....
aaargh, the learning curve never stops....
