OK first things first. I bought this box from someone who I also payed extra to, to get bearings replaced. After lots of effort gettting it into my coupe, it was a dead cause, the box has a bad main shaft and more. boo hoo i still need to buy one of these gearboxs which WORKS. help me! im currently running a 120Y 4 speed.
shopping list:
Nissan : metal cover between tailshaft and gearbox approx $20 (not shown in undercar pic)
Nissan : rubber boot for clutch fork approx $20 rubber boot for where gearstick engages the box approx $10.
Auto store : stanza / sunny gearbox mount
Auto store : 1 large washer (for clutch cable)
somewhere : FS5W60A gearbox
A: here is where the gearbox sits when bolted onto the engine. as you can see you need to make a custom mount.
B: I copied the U pattern design and ended up using large washers welded together as a spacer. It allows for simple adjustment.
C: see the washers, note one side needs more washers than the other.
problems i ran into:
-broken 5 speed (buyer beware!)
-need to bash the tunnel where the clutch fork pokes out of the gearbox.
-need to use a large washer between gearbox/clutch cable entrance to hold the clutch cable in position.
-needed the little screw which holds the gearstick into the box (5 speed is DIFFERENT from 4 speed box)
-gearbox oil stinks like ####
-make your own reverse switch (normally-ON)
-make your own U shaped mount. I used a thick piece of metal 225mm x 110 and it JUST fit, but fit properly and sturdily.
cheers to all the people who helped me with this swap over and to all the folks who wrote articles about the 5 speed swap and related topics. this website rules for 1200 info.
