Hi guys,

I'm a newby here and am designing a twincam 16v crossflow cylinder head for my a12 powered 1200 coupe on Solidworks (3D CAD).

I need a GA16DE head to confirm the bore spacing is the same as or close to the mighty Aseries amongst other measurements as I may end up using GA16 cams.
I also need to take some measurements of a A series head (head bolt spacings ect) I have just come over to Perth from NZ so all my parts are back home in the garage.
Would prefer locally ideally and either buy or borrow.

Cheers Bede

sounds great, ga16de are easy to find at any wreckers these days.
I believe you best design a cast iron turbo manifold first for
the A series to get some cash as plenty of peeps would love one.

eg.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Cast-Turbo ... ories&hash=item5d2e972d18

Otherwise a 2 piece alloy block to suit the ga16de head straight off and
also accept a ca18de box bolt up pattern would be much more effective
as there are too few 5 speeds for the A series and to do the timing case
and eliminate the pushrods requires quite some work.

eg.
separate crankcase
separate cylinder casing

Best would be to make a 2 piece block to accept a zx9r head
using e15et crank or other e series crank as the zx9r is a
75mm bore engine and similar to E series spacing.
eg.

Thanks for the reply D.
The ideas you talked about are pretty outside the box!!!
Casting really interests me and I do some reverse engineering in my job but it isn't car related. I am basically trying to recreate (if it was ever made) the AZ12 head. My initial goal is to get an accurate 3D model with all the components.
I will look into rapid prototyping or something of the sort and at what other technologies are availiable.
I'm basically doing this for a challenge and to go through the engineering process.

Are there many Perth members on 1200.com?

My friend who does all my fab work does lots of engineering exercises..............he gets the item working and then moves on.

Getting a single or twin cam head on a A-series block is pretty straight forward BUT the amount of time that goes into it makes it cost prohibitive for most people. I have 90% of the parts needed (including modded block) to fit an E-series head and even with that the machine work would drive the price beyond just doing an engine swap. If somehow someone could come up with a crossflow for 2-3K I think lots of people would buy them but I just don't think that's likely to happen

When you finish be sure to show us the pictures............sounds like a neat project.

Just from years of thinking about it and waking up to some logic! :)

Doing the block to suit a factory forged crank would be much easier
if you make a wet sleeve cylinder case in one section (only needs 20cm billet)
and the separate bolt on crankcase (another 15cm bit of billet)

heads require alot more work as RT states too much money to make
the timing case and other mods to work on an A series base.

If you have a block with easy to bolt up box and heads from ga16de
then you have a winner and worth selling for a bit more as just
putting on a head involves more money on modding an A series base.

sangropers-I had to google that one haha.

I understand that it is an expencive excercise and is something I have not yet fully investigated. My time is free at the end of the day which is a huge cost. I'm wanting to keep the Aseries gear so I am not changing engine mounts, wiring, fuel system ,tunnel etc because I want to have the option of changing it back to a completey original car one day. In the end I may end up going with a crossflow pushrod or even admit the project is not feasible, but it is something that I am really wanting to have a go at.
I will be sure to keep you updated with my progress and will put up a image of the head once it is drawn up.

Dundee, sounds awesome mate, I'm just in Mosman Park. Give me a text or ring and we can go from there. 0404 632 844

Cheers Bede
