Thanks 1200rc, thats exactly the picture I have been searching for, something that shows the springs and plates mounted in between the gears. It obviously has it's limitations but looks more driver friendly than a normal locker. I can go ahead and design and build one over Xmas now.
All I have to do is work out the spring pressures to suit my coupe and then find the time to make one. Excellent work, thanks heaps for your imput.

Paul.

Here's the Phantom Grip website for more info. Unfortunately they don't list one for H165s.

id suggest speaking to the guy i got mine from, his details are on my website, as im sure they spent a lot of time trying to develop it and he has done h165 b4 (mine )

so he may be able to assist with spring pressures ect

does anyone know of anyone in perth that does this
it would be good to know. i would have no trouble in forking out 300 to get a "lsd" alternate.

it's better than paying 900 odd for one.

you should be able to just buy the parts and get it put into your own diff, im quite sure the gears were not machined when mine was done, my mechanic (not the guy i bought sprung load from) also said he could swap it from one centre to the other for me, so i guess there no special tools but im struggling to picture how exactly you would get it in there while compresing it

No it's not....

Have you done any research on this piece of s!@#

Thats what many people reckon of it.

To fir the phantom grip (PG) one needs to machine the gears inside the diff. The gears come case hardened, by machining the gears, they are no longer hard.
Also the PG works like a plate LSD in that there are friction surfaces. In the PG's case, its the PG block and the diff gears......which are no longer hard.
So...one wears out the diff gears quick smart.

I once heard a saying.. went something like..
"if it's to good to be true..." damn, can't remember the rest of it.

we never said this is a TRUE LSD.

we know it will not last.

But for the price that 1200 Diffs are going for why not have some fun.

Yes the phantom grip type arrangement is certainly nothing like the quality of design of a true LSD. The old saying applies, you get what you pay for.....BUT, it's really simple to manufacture and 1200 open diff centres are very easy to source! So what if you only get one season out of it
The big advantage for rally people is that it beats the hell out of the difficult driving characteristics of a true locker, thats the only reason I'm interested and I wont be paying any money for it because I'll build it myself and throw it away when everything is worn out

1200rc, it fits inside the diff centre because there are holding pins and metal straps that keep it closed when fitting. Just drive the pin out of the diff and put it phantom grip, drive the diff pin back in, then remove the metal holding strap and the pins from the ends of the phantom grip. once the straps and pins are out the thing springs outwards and applied pressure to the gears, just like the photo at the top of the page.
Simple cheap disposeable alternative to CIG lockers.

I have a 1980 Corolla SW in my Locost and Phantom grip said that they would make one for me for US$300 if I shipped my Dif down to them in Florida, USA.

E-mail them and see what they say.
