I recall a bloke getting 10mm steel manifold plates laser cut for $90- but that's as far as I can go without speculating..... never stopped me in the past though

I took the car out on the weekend after all the mods (sway bar, increased spring rate, corner weights, gearbox, clutch, increased hp, etc) and the car was a jet!!

The car all up with me in it weighs 728kgs (about 650kg alone). Corner weights where 3kg out across the front and 5kg out across the rear..

Unfortunatley with extra hp comes extra heat... Not keeping a close enough eye on the guages the car overheated and blew a head gasket.

I pulled the motor down to check for detonation and not a spot!! I could put another gasket on, a bigger radiator and go again but will put the A15 block under it now..

Obviously not the grunt of an SR20 or CA18 but coming out of mid speed corners with 3rd gear drifts was great fun.

The photo shows the blown gasket on No1 and blow by on Nos2&3... but no detonation thankfully Open in new window

Just thought i'd bump this with another question....
I think that for an average bloke.. such as myslef to get something like this going, the main thing to overcome is the manifolds and airbox.
You said that your mate helped you make them so they would have been almost nothing for you BUT
how much do you rekon theyd cost to be made from a fabricator??
I still cant believe how much kw this thing made, and its an a12!
sweet, simple, sexy.

I asked a friend who does Motorsport fabrication how much to copy my manifolds and he said about $1500 for the pair... which I thought wasnt to bad for the amount of work that goes into it...

Im making a J-pipe setup now just to see what can be done with a very basic and easy setup on an A12, that is on the other forum here. Maybe keep an eye on that and see what sort of hp figures I end up with there.

Im hoping to get about 60kw atw with about 10lbs...

On my old blown motor I blew a gasket like that. The flame travel burned away the aluminium from the head between the chambers.

Yea 1500 isnt that bad really. COnsidering that its two manifolds and how much work has to go into em.
Definately worth it in my mind...wish i had that kinda money to throw at once at the ol a series.
Good to hear you gonna try a j pipe setup. would be good to see a comp.

Am thinking about boring an A15 out to 1600cc...

I was thinking about forced induction on my own 1600cc A series, but Jeff Taylor mentioned he had seen bores split, and I wondered if the head gasket might be geting a bit thin between the bores for a turbo as well.

Does anyone have any first hand experience of bored out A15s with turbos or superchargers on them?

Hey Topgear,
Were you using an open chamber head to lower the compression?

What ever happened to this engine/ vehicle?
Did the a15 ever eventuate?
Love the turbo set up, pretty much exactly what I was wanting to do years ago.
