i just been playing with my A14 turbo setup, changin it from blow through to draw through.
just because it's simpler.
i'm using a 1 3/4 SU through a T25 turbo.
i fitted the carbon seal, and the turbo felt to be in very good nick (from what i could feel). put it togeather and apart from being smokey, (turbo very worn, once i pulled it down).

verry laggy to drive, was making boost around 4500, and totally different to drive then the recent blow through, can't hold boost into next gears, and not much fun.
ne idea's from you guy's??, what would cause this Lagyness??

I have an A12 Turbo Motor with a draw-through Stromberg carbie. I am using a TD04 off a Mitsubishi Lancer so ive been told(quiet small). The Motor received a gasket kit and set of rings (no bearings, it was a test project to see if it would work??).

It makes 10lbs boost when reving it and makes 18lbs boost from around 3000rpm on.

I would say your turbo is to big, I reckon better to bit a bit small than to big, especially if its a road car.

We ran (thrashed) it on the Dyno and stuffed around for half a day and made 70kw atw (around 120hp). Not bad for a stocky 1200 motor (Did have A14 head on it though) I have done 2 hard days at Mallala with it and had no troubles. It starts first time you turn the key. Im going to put an A15 block under it with a cam and see what happens then. Hoping to make an easy 100-110kw atw (170-180hp)

Have a look here. It explains it all. Have you considered an a14 or a15? It will make quite a difference and will be alot cheaper (you can get a deacent one for around $350). Also, you cant run a draw through systen and an intercooler because it is like having a big b o m b hanging off the front of your car.

edit: it dosnt let me write b o m b

Topgear, how well sized did you find the TD04? I have a pair of them lying around, and Have been itching to build a drawthrough set up for ages. I can get Su's, or strombergs, for $30 each. The turbos were free. I have swags of motors lying around too. I should be able to build the whole shooting match for sweet FA.
A burning question I have is, do these turbo's need to be carbon sealed? One of my turbo's is well used, the other is mint. I don't want to ruin the good one if it needs to be carbon sealed first.
If you're running 18psi, which path did you travel down to drop the compression?

I dont know what size exhaust housing it was?? It was a small 3 bolt pattern? As far as Im concerned the sizing was excellent. I didnt do anything to the turbo as far as the seals go, I just bolted it on. If it sits and idles for a long time (15mins) it will blow a little bit of oil smoke initially (10-20secs) It was a stock cam and stock compression (9.0-1?), the motor is a fully stock A12 with an A14 head. After the thrashing it has received, it has reassured me the A-series motor is a bullet proof unit.

It was built from 3 engines, Block from one motor, Pistons rods and 300,000k bearings from another, yes 300,000k old bearings. And A14 head obviously from another motor. It received a set of rings to seal compression, and a gasket kit. So it was a cheap slap together motor to see what would happen, and it worked exceptionally well

9.0:1, with 18psi? Were you running methanol or something?
Not throwing sh1t at you or nothing dude, but that sounds a bit improbable to me. What about spark? Did you lock the mech advance weights?
When you say on the dyno, was that in a car, or on a bench dyno? Standard cast pistons are pretty fragile, and I would expect the conditions you describe to destroy them in the twinkling of an eye. (As MANY have discovered).

Even so, I'm interested to hear more about your set up. How long did you run this engine for? I've heard of drawthrough set ups rooting the seals in about 1-2 weeks.

Just ran premium unleaded (98), locked the weights in the dizzy and set it at around 17-18 degs and went from there... I had a mate give me some hints on tuning it...

We ran the car on a roller dyno, at one stage we forgot to turn the fan on and it quickly overheated and pumped all the water out!! Everyone paniced and said it had blown a head gasket, I said hang on lets put some water back in and see what happens?? I put water back in it, no air bubbles?? Oh well, lets go again....!!

I dont drive it on the road as it is only used for club sprints etc. It has done 2 hard days at Mallala, all up its probably done around 2.5-3hrs running flat out under full boost, I still think its good going for a $220 engine

Dont worry im surprised its still going myself, when its on boost you can hear its working its head off!! Thats why I only spent $220 building it, if it goes bang its no big loss...?

Its a true testiment to these motors....
