I had assumed the rear axle on my ute to be a Borg Warner but comparing to this pic in the tech section, mine looks different. What is this...is it any good or would I be better off swapping it for the H165?

BTW, This is an SA built ute from about 1981.

Both look to be borgys, rusty one is a 1200 borgy, the other is a corolla borgy.

that is a Borg Warner model 68 diff which originally fitted to Australian made 120Y (B210) sedand between June '76 and (I think) may- april '78.... I have one in a March '77 120Y sedan

probably not the best pic though

the other diff looks to ba a Borg Warner model 78

A BW diff as an Original Equipment fitting on a 1200 ute?

interesting!

Yeah the rusty one is the same borgy thats in my partners 1200 auto which probably is the same as the 120y diff, the other is from a ke30 corolla because thats the underside of harrys coupe!

Cheers fellas, is there any advantage or disadvantage to this axle over the H165? My other ute has the H165 (it's still an SA built one but an earlier '76 model)

They are quite strong, corolla one is larger than 1200 borgy. Jap diffs (H165/190etc.) all have quite easy-to-remove centres so servicing is a bit easier, borgys actually recommend never to change oil unless service is needed, much more agricultural. Stick with the borgy unless it is thrashed then find a jap to throw in.

the BW 68 will cope with a 200 BHP L18!...

having said that the BW68 that did that was a CIG locker! (Welded up spider gears)

However the H165 has the option of LSD... via Nismo
if you can find a bluebird Station wagon or a sedan with H165 with a 4 wheel discs they will transfer over too!

if it was an pre 1974 1200 ute which had the H145 I'd say keep the BW diff however.... I'm starting to see that the H165 has it's advantages... the fact that you don't have to remove the whole assembly to ajust lash/gear mesh! for one!

also here in australia the BW68 also came in the KE30 corolla... unlike the 120Y BW diff
which has 3.889 ratio the KE30 diff had
3.889 4.10 and 4.30...

but getting gearsets/parts to the UK might be a problem!!
