Have a look at the engine number pad. The first three Characters will be either A12, A14, or A15. If the mounts aren't in the original place, then it will have the distributor under No. 3 plug & the engine number will be just to the rear of the engine from there.

This will be your engine model code & basicly it means
A= A series Datsun engine
12= 1200cc
14= 1400cc
15= 1500cc
It's all too easy once you know.

I've had an A series before with a blank number pad on the block. You can at least tell an A12 from a 14/15 by the manifold bolt pattern. as I think even the later A12's still retained the early style bolt pattern. Anyone like to confirm that?

OK, I am guessing that it has the distributor near No. 3 plug, so we can rule out A10's & 1200 engines.

Next, look at the distance of the head from the bellhousing. This will at least rule in,.. or out, the A12 engine.

If the distance is short, as in this photo, then you most likely have an A12 engine from a B210/ 120Y or a B310/ Sunny sedan.

If the distance is large, like in this shabby flick, it will most likely be an A14 or A15 engine.
