In my experience, a Haltech is a lot better ECU but thats why you pay more for it.

I've seen a LOT of rotors (and other things, but rotors are easy for me to compare) running Microtech's, in different states of tune, and tuned by lots of different people, and none of them ran anywhere near as smooth as my Haltech. The only really smooth ones I saw were running Haltech or Motec.

Having said that, if you're looking at one of the cheaper ECU's you cant go past microtech. They run well enough and have more than enough features for any street car, and have really good support. The laptop program is really good also.

Edit: Haltech runs without an AFM

what about getting the stocko one remapped, i'm running a mines3 chip, at 10psi with the T25g, it goes well. i have a T28 on the shelf ready, but i still have to control this current setup, in a 1200 coupe. what charger are you going to run? you can get a haltech like a powerfc, plugs directly into the stocko loom. if you go aftermarket haltech is better than mircotech, it has alot tune-able points. or finer tuning capability and no AFM needed as Timo said.

I'm still a fan of the Autronic.

It almost killed me trying to do it myself as Autronic supply 'bugger all' docs with their ECU. I'd consider that the docs are appropriate now that I learned 'everything basic' the hard way.

I've got no personal experience with any other ECUs.

But here some things I learned.

1. some ECUs seem cheap, until you start adding all the essential options. Boost control, MAP sensors, looms, relays etc all add up on the total cost.
2. Tuning is a big part of the cost.
3. most aftermarket ECUs are not better than the factory ECU. They are more easily tuned though.
4. Some ECU manufacturers would prefer that you didn't buy second hand. You can save heaps this way. They don't wear out, and new features are not an issue.
5. The 'base map' theory is overrated. The many different combinations of engine parts make a good base map a gamble.

So that's what I know.

Thanks heaps for that insight fellas. The turbo I will be running is a GT2860. As for the factory item, it wasnt supplied with the engine as the previous owner was running an aftermarket but didn't want to part with it. The only reason I ask is because a mate said run a wolf and another said the haltech will be better. Thanks again guys.

i've got a wolf to wire up to my sr20det, for the money i reckon its pretty good. tunable every 125rpm, laptop tunable (older microtech's aren't) built in pin code feature (to lock your engine basically), electronic boost controler built in, turbo timer built in. with hand controller about $1400.

as chris said, they might be easier to tune but the good old factory nissan ecu is a good thing!

all aftermarket ecu's are map sensor based and don't need an air flow meter. i think the only exception to this is the apexi power fc.

the disco potato should go well on a CA

actually, now i notice its not one, still will provide plenty of neddies all the same!
