Gday, its been a long time between posts. This is my drama, I own a 1979 1200 ute, 4 speed and at the moment my temp and fuel gauge are playing up. I put the key in and turn on the ignition until the dash lights come on, The fuel gauge starts to move towards the empty line as if to go to full (i have about half a tank currently) and then it stops and and goes into the fully empty position. If the motor is hot then the same thing happens to the temp gauge. Then if I turn the ignition off then on again nothing moves. If I wait a little while the same thing happens again, they goe up a little then die off. All my other electrics work including all my dash warning lights, flashing lights and bells and whistles. I have checked my earths and they are all clean with good contacts. What are your thoughts.

Cheers pussum1200, I might just put up with until the CA18 goes in and with it the silvia gauge cluster. For now I might just carry a fuel can with me, just incase.

I reckon you may have a burnt trace on the circuit board that's on the back of the instrument cluster.

Pull the cluster out and inspect all of the copper tracks on the back. Clean any carbon build up or corrosion with rubbing alcohol or metho.

Wierd fault - I'll give you that!

Easy one! fuel gauge and temp gauge share the same ignition power supply reducted through a voltage reducer. found on back of dash. Make shore any bolt on back of dash are tight and tighten any pins inside of plugs. look out for any burnt section of printed circuit. bad connection is most likely cause of fault, we sparkies see this all the time.

agree with 1200sx I had a similar problem and turned out to be the voltage reducer. Hence it works when cold but after use a bit of a temp change and it stops all together. Good Luck

Sorry about the delay dudes, I will check the voltage reducer and the circuit board ASAP. Hope this fixes it as it may be a while befor the CA18DE goes in.
