Hi all, was there ever a round gauge km/h speedometer available for any 1200 model? or another datsun even? Or perhaps a nice looking aftermarket speedo face to slip in. Trying to keep it look as stock as possible but MPH is a pain when all the signs are km/h! Thanks for any info.
Japanese 1200 coupes used a round speedo in KPH while Aussie ones were round, but in MPH, complete with trip meter.
The later model utility/truck [1974 & onwards] utilised the coupe dash with its three round instruments, & grille, as an upgrade/ facelift, & the speedo was calibrated in KPH. If this didn't actually happen in '74, then it was soon after.
I do not know if these had a trip meter or not, so perhaps someone here can tell us, although the picture I have of an early 80's ute shows the speedo without the trip meter. Perhaps even later models got it.
The utility was marketed here untill the late 80's & in Japan they went into the early 90's.
South Africa, on the other hand, still makes the 1200 Ute in an updated form, however the instruments look just like they did way back when.
I don't know about a trip meter in these, but they are sold in two levels of trim.
Basicly you can get the lower cost Workhorse, or the more expensive Show Pony, & these upmarket models might have the better instruments. Your best bet is to contact one or more of our South African members, preferably ones with Ute's, known over there as a 'Bakkie' to see what was available as you may need the whole instrument cluster to make it all work for you.
Remember that Australia, New Zealand, Japan & South Africa are all right drive countries, just in case there is any variation in the fitment of these speedo's into your left drive Canadian car.
I suspect that the 230kph Smiths speedo, mentioned earlier may have been calibrated in KPH[ph]
Thats Kilometers Per Hour [perhaps]
