Gday all,
new plan for end of this year. big a series
now my question is:
do i get an a14 an work that OR do i get an a15 with a14 head an work that?
and i need a suggestion on a good gearbox to hold up: i will be running soon a 31spline hilux diff with 4.3:1 ratio

its going to be injected turbo an i want it revving around the 8800 mark (well i will build it to handle more but i dont want to go past that) does anyone have a reliable motor that can run that high?

all info an help will be much appreciated

if you are going turbo why do you want to rev so high???
You want the turbo setup to produce alot of torque down low and change at around 7000rpm, Your 4.3 ratio should be good for this. i would go the celica/dellow setup for this engine. They are strong cheap and have a good short sharp shift with excellent ratios.
Revving to 8800 would sound oh so nice but will stretch head bolts and bearing bolts esp with boost over 10psi and would just be too hard on the little a series

Converted has it exactly right.
If you are going for a blown engine, then go for torque & keep the revs down a bit.

7000 RPM is a good safe number to red line at & when you slip it up a gear it should be right where you want it in the torque band.

The Dellow/Cillycar combo is really the best gearbox choice if you want strength, availability, & affordability. No rocket science here, just common sense.

The best torque producer in the A series range is the A15 simply because of the extra 5mm stroke over the A14 & they will hold up at 7,000 rpm without problems. In a blown engine, I see no advantage of one over the other between the A14 & A15 heads.

If you are going for broke with this engine, then I kind of like doweling the flywheel, & pay a LOT of attention to your ignition curve.
The lack of boost retard has been the root cause of very many failed blown engines.

do you have a budget? i agree with dattodude, go at least a L series, if not FJ, CA or SR. at least it's easier to have a stronger 5 speed, but being a drag racer you might want an auto?

i agree with fat_120y i absolutely hate the look of the rocker covers would be nice if you could fabricate an a series cover to fit a l20b or something. But it is a very ugly motor, very torque tho

fwd e15et turbo pulsars are in the 11s, cant see why a fullhouse A cant do equal or better if you can get the traction down, big revs and a gigantic turbo with the right ratios would be i think ideal for a drag setup
