Ute diff in a Coupe

How hard is it to change a coupe diff to a ute diff?? i have decided to put a ute diff in my coupe and see how long it will last with the CA if it doesnt last i will start all over again. Do you need to change anything or does it just go in?

Anyones help will be great

it just goes in, the only thing you need to change I think is where the handbrake adapter fits as it's slightly different in position. Other then that it bolted striaght in. Just make sure you get the ute, rear brake fluid splitter, as the coupes is different.

PS My mate uses a ute diff for a CA18DET and he says it holds up fine.

you also have to modifiy the drive shaft as is 25mm to long and has a diffrent yoke on it

yeah i got a ute diff in

i think i ended up making a bracket to mount the handbrake bable thing to the back of the diff centre, and didnt have ute brake line splitter so i just cable tied the coupe one to the ute diff as its just a question of mounting it, i had a tailshaft made and the guy put in larger replacable uni-joints for me to take more strength and obviously so i can replace em

You will also need larger u-bolts (longer and larger radius) if you didnt get them with the diff, i got mine off a vanette and then elongated the holes in the 1200 plate that the shocker mounts too to make it fit, thats because the vanette one has a larger pin for the shocker and would create problems in finding a good shocker to fit


p.s. when you get sick of blowing the centres ill buy the housing off ya , not that i know thats goona happen i just think it might, replacing centers wont be a problem for you though its the axels that will be hard to find if you have problems with those

im going to bump this old as thread instead of creating a new one

when sticking in the ute diff assembly, what driveshaft to use ? as it was said its 25mm longer? modify, new, or from another car ?

interested to see what can be used.didnt say in the tech section as to what driveshafts to use.

if your sticking with a-series motor and gearbox you can use a ute tailshaft

otherwise custom fabrication like i did cause i couldn't get my hands on a ute one at the time (bout $200)

the ute diff centre has a different flange connection and is physically longer... therefore closer to the gearbox and requiring a shorter tailshaft

to use your h145 handbrake you'll need to make a bracket that offsets the mounting position on the 165, if you can get both together and look at the back of the diffs where the handbrake connects to you'll see it easy, or cutoff and weld the h145 mount onto the 165 housing .... think that makes sense ??
as for tailshaft, you'll need a shorter one as the nose on the 165 is longer than the 145. i've still got that 165 yoke if you want it ??

see in the pic (h165 diff) the part thats mounted to the diff centre on the left side ... that needs to be moved more to the centre to suit the 145 handbrake set up. aLso i'm not sure on the wagons how the rear shocks mount ?? i'd assume it's the same as the sedan, so you'll also need to cut the spring mount plate off the 145 and have it welded to the 165, you need to cut the 165 one off as well so you just weld the 145 one back in its place.
see in the pic how the shock mounts to the bottom plate, this is in a coupe or ute, the shock runs up at much more of an angle, where as the sedan and wagon?? the shock bolts to the diff mount on top of the leaves and runs more verticle .....

thanks boof. the shocks in my wagon look identical to that right there ^^.
Except my shocks have another eye on the top end that have a bolt going through like the bottom.
I think i know what you mean. i have both the h145 in the wgon and the h165 out so i havnt really had a decent look but thanks for the info.
