Hello everyone,

This is my first post to this forum as I have just purchased a 1200 Coupe! My intention (along with my son) is to race it at motorkhanas, hillclimbs and sprints. The car is in a pretty good condition with a few minor flaws (I hope!)...Now, here's my main concern... the car has Stanza struts, Skyline disks, calipers and standard height King Springs. The rear from what I can see is also standard. The problem is that the left side of the car is about 18 - 20mm lower than the right side! I'm at a loss as I don't know whether the LS is too low or the RS is too high...maybe the LR is the problem or maybe the LF!!!! Tyres and wheels are the same on both sides and the front springs (from what I can see) are sitting in their cups. I'm at a loss as to how to sort this out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and regards

Paul H

PS. By the way, when I first checked the car out, the above problem was not noticable.

Hi Paul, I suggest you jack him up and support all 4 corners of the body on jackstands.
The wheels should all sag to the same level.
Then you can have a good look at the coil springs at the front and see if they are equal length.
To have the height vary like that, the springs, length rate or set, must be cactus.
Sure does sound a wee bit strange

Someone may have trimmed the passenger spring down so when in the drivers seat the car is level.

Stanza struts bottom out a lot as they are longer than a standard 1200 strut, you may find the constant bottoming out has seized or callopsed one of the inserts.

I think that may have happened to my front shocks on sunday at Oran Park. The car seemed to be bouncing around a lot on the car trailer driving home. Damn turn 4.

maybe one is a stanza and one is a 200b with spring pearch welded on... they are shorter than the stanza strut.

more likely one spring is shorter than the other

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the replys. I just went out and had a closer look at the front springs and after checking inside the bottom strut cup, I noticed that the left front spring had been cut! The right front is uncut and still a KDFL17 standard spring. I guess this explains the drop to one side! Maybe the previous owner(s) never got round to cutting the right one....who knows. Not as bad as I thought after all then...

Once again, thanks to everyone. I'm sure I'll have more questions to ask!!

Cheers

Paul H

Paul you need to check the corner wieghts, the reaosn why the car sits higher one the driver side is to get the balance correct with driver. As that driver may wieght more or less than you (could have been a 62KG driver like me or 120KG type like my buddy who owned our coupe). So check the car with you in it. Someone was actually quite clever in their set up......or at least trying to be. My car is higher on the drivers side......looks goofy but corner wieght and F/R balance are what I needed.

Thanks Tom....funny you should mention that but when my son sat in it last night (63kg), I noticed that the car was more or less level! Maybe the previous owner was trying to do as you said. Anyway, I'll leave it as it is for now. We are about to strip the car and rebuild it so we'll pay more attention to the setup when we put it back together! Thanks again.

Cheers
