BW diff into 1000

Righto

doing some research on the site and web, and there is plenty of info on the R31 diff housing going into 1200s

Beattie had a thread a while ago about using a p411 diff, but that was a dead end.

Since then I have decided that I will need to cut down something, and the R31 seems to be the popular choice, and since it comes with rear discs and the option of LSD (later on) it meets my selection critera.

Since this diff housing came in commodores/falcons/skylines plus othes I am sure, I want peoples opinion on which one to grab.

I plan on rims no bigger then 14s since I think 15s and bigger will look silly on my 'standard looking' thou.

I am thinking that the skyline one is the one to go with since,
1. Its nissan (keeping it inhouse)
2. Its rear disc
3. It has LSD std in the silouette (i think)
4. Its already 4 stud
5. I think I can fit 14s onto it without modding the dics any. Not sure here.
6. There are heaps lying around
7. Everyone knows about them and has experience with working on them.

if all that makes sense, what are other peoples opinion on the commodore/falcon/others.

Yup thats what im doing now too! I can get them cut down to suit whatever for $550. All that will be left to do is Re-weld the 1000 hangers on.

Pintara and R31 are the same but a different spline axle. I dont know what spline the commo/falcon diffs are tho? But i do think the Silouette had a LSD.

And HOPEFULLY they will clear my 13" Watanabes... Handbrake is in the caliper too on em.

Gee i think thats like 5 people now who want me to get their diff cut down.

I gotta call the mob tomorro anyway so ill find out what the go is (may be cheaper if we do it in bulk?) Even though it is a special trade price

i'd be happy with the BW out of a late 120y..
can't remember if the center out of others.. fits though..

Chris you need to confirm what your getting for your $550
Cause to me it sounds exxy if its just housing mods
You'd want to be getting axles shortened for that price too
Infact I'd want the spring pads put back on for that price too

You know I need one done too for the wagon

Pintara is 25 spline
Skyline is 28 spline like Falcons and Commodores
Lots of ratios available too
mine is 4.11

$550 includes axle shortening. Ill see if i can swindle saddles re-welded for that price. Will have to give him all your diffs tho to cut and shut the saddles on though! Or a sample and he will fabricate but that will be more expencive!

Neil, do you know how well a R31 setup fits under a 13" rim?

I am sure that we can at least round up an old h145 for the template ( have a spare sitting in the shed).

As far as the brackets for the handbrake, could the dude get them done too?

Even if its a bit more to have the extras fabbed up, it means much eaiser installation, and you dont have to do it.

you shouldnt need handbrake brackets, just need to mod the skyline handbrake cables to fit up to the datsun handbrake

pintara, VL non turbo,most ea and most eb 1 falcons are 25 spline
skyline, VLturbo, VN onwards and EB 2 onwards are 28 spline
pintara skyline and commodore housings are all pretty much the same, apart from the obvious width difference
but falcon diffs have different axle flanges and the 28 spline ones have a bigger bearing for the pinion, so not a good candidate for shortening

13s will fit over the standard r31 discs if you grind the fins off the calipers

id like to know what they do in terms of which axles to shorten, as surely you would have to cut both axles down to make it small enough.....how much shorter are 1000 diffs than 1200?
coz when i was doing mine i think it was 100mm you had to cut the axle down by to get passed the undersized bit (can respline on the undersized part of the axle obviously)
and i ended up swapping axles and getting on cut down 135mm and that ended up 20mm widers than standard 1200
