bugga!! my one and only key snaped in half as i tried to turn on the ignition, it must have been so weak because i didnt even feel it bend. luckily there was a little bit poking out the end of the barrel so was able to yank it out with a pair of pliers. how much does it cost for a new key? there was something else i was going to say in this thread, but i have totally forgotten it..

Your not wrong! BUGGA! Won't cost much more than $5 bucks, try get a reputable place to make them and clean them up properly so they don't kill your locks.

ie. use a locksmith not woolworth cigarette checkout.

Operating a vehicle with just one key, & a seriously weakened one at that is pure folly as you have now discovered.

If the key is badly worn, get him to make it from the number that should be encoded on the original. This will ensure that it will be all fresh & unworn, just like it was when it left the factory.

If he copies it directly from a badly worn original what you get is an exact copy of the worn key.
You really need two door & two ignition keys so you can keep a spare set at home for emergencies.

Right, new key copies are as inexpensive as $2 ... now that the key is broken, expect $35 for a custom cut. I doubt if they can copy the broken key.

JDM-built 1200s have the key number penciled on the cup holder sticker. You might look there and see if your key code is written down.

In Australia at least, the number was stamped directly into the key, so this should avoid the need to scramble around looking for numbers on locks or on cup holders, ... assuming of course that the broken one is an original.

Cup holder? Now there's a feature I could use, but I suspect that US models must have got something that we didn't.

Cup holder? Datsuns had cup holders? My hand brake makes a nice cup holder, except that cups have gotten huge, some are so big they hit the steering wheel while being held in the lap.

maybe a sticker in the glove box even.

Part of the problem is the ignition key was also the door key and the hatch key too, using it to open the trunk or hatch will break the key fast, that and the cut on the ignition keys seems to have had a really thin part in the middle, datsun replacement door tumblers seemed to use a better cut for lasting longer, or the ones I got do.
