anyone doen the nine inch diff in the 1200's yet??

i was talking with a non datsun guy the other day about making me a rb31 for my sedan, he asked why not use an alloy 9"?? i thought yeah why not.... me coupe will probs turn into a drag car so i was thinking take the rb diff out of that and fit it to the sedan and go nine inch in the coupe instead....apparently i could buy a new diff set up cheaper then converting an old rb diff

anyone tried? thoughts? and before you say it i know it is ford...but who can argue with its strength

Yeah there are a few utes that use them. They're heavy so unless you're running or going to run big big power then they're not really necessary, but at least you won't be (or shouldn't be) breaking things with one.

The 9 inch is very heavy. About 35kg just weight just in the centre. The alloy carrier will only reduce weight by approx 5kg. The R31 style of borg warner is an excellent diff and can easily handle 300 hp with decent launches or 600hp without doing seriously hard launches. I used to do conversions all the time and rebuilds for cars like Vp commodore 355 stroker motors with heaps of power and I have only seen a few diffs that have broken a crownwheel or pinion. With a full spool they are an absolute weapon and heaps lighter.

I was reading in a Zoom mag about a rx2 with a 28spline BW and he reckoned it got to a point where the axles would twist, but using billet axles fixed that.
A mate of mine has a 9" in an rx3 and he reckons the weight at the rear ruins the balance of the car making it handle badly. I would assume the effect would be similar in a 1200.

Whilst I have no personal experience with this diff , I do know that the reason the 1200 is a great car is because of its light weight, all the components are as light as possible whilst still being able to do the job they were designed for, so unless you were putting a V8 into your 1200, adding components that are heavier than they need to be , really is at odds with the design philosophy that makes the 1200 a great car in the first place.

I couldn't agree more. Although the 9 inch is argueably the best diff for drag racing, I have personally blowk up 4 9 inch diffs. Doing burnouts naturally. 1 i blew up with a mild 186 red motor in my old LJ torana and 1 I blew up with a stock 353 blue motor in a VC commodore.

Burnouts = broken diffs no matter which one you choose to use.

The 9" Ford diff can comfortably handle outputs that would tax even the hairiest alky burning, NOx sniffing, blown FJ or SR20 that you are ever likely to see, so how on earth did you manage to "blow up" four of these diffs & what actually failed in each one?

For a catastrophic failure to occur behind a mild 186 or a stock 253 there would need to be something terribly wrong with them in the first place as there is no way that either of these engines would develop enough power to bother a 9" diff.
