Actually, this fuel economy is much better than it seems at first glance as it's 50 miles [80k] per short measured US gallon [3.7854L] while the Imperial gallon is 20% greater at 4.54609L, so we would be getting 96k per Imperial gallon or almost 60mpg. [about 21.1k/l or 4.55l/100k]

At todays fuel prices, it's got a lot going for it however you want to measure it.

I'm dredging up this old thread because I seem to have the A15 with a round port head here. Seems to have the same bolt pattern as the oval port head but at least from the outside the ports look very round. Maybe its the A14 economy head you were talking about?

In my perfect little world (only exists in my mind) I'd love to have a single sidedraft intake manifold on this thing to which I would attach a single Brit made SU carb.

I'd settle for a single sidedraft (any kind) carburetor however. Is there a sidedraft manifold available? Am I consigned to hacking up a stock manifold and creating some kind of Frankensteins Monster custom intake?

Thanks!

There are many available. From many vendors, they are all for DCOE type sidedraft carburetor (Weber, Dellorto, Mikuni, Solex).

See "Single Side-draft" in club article "Choosing a Carburetor".

I found one on Ebay - but the guy wants $43 for shipping!

It looks like mine, but I'd want a picture of it from the port angle to be sure.

I'd modify the replacement and keep the one on my engine now as a backup.

Pretty sure this is the same as mine.
Where can you get a new gasket for one like this?

Yeah - but so far I've only found the 'wrong' ones.

There's another guy I know who has an A15 in his LBC (little British car) - a bugeye sprite - he has a spare old intake manifold. I want to see if the one he has is also the round port as he has offered it to me.

Have you tried your Nissan dealers parts counter? The A14 Thrift engine [or Fuel Miser, or whatever name that they applied back then] was found in the US model 210 [B310] which was made up untill about 1982, so it's still a late model car & dealers can still source a lot of stuff for them.

Give it a try.

Thanks Dodgeman, I'll try that.
Ok, I have pretty much decided I will buy a replacement manifold of the same type I have now, hack it up and see if I can make my own sidedraft intake, if that seems like it will work then I'll pull my intake & put the 'new one' on and see if it runs.
At least it will be interesting, and if it doesn't work I can backtrack with my old setup.

OR

Does anyone know of an air cleaner I can put on the Hitachi downdraft that uses less than 1.5 inches of space above the carb?
