Landcruiser brake conversion caliper orientation?

G"day dudes

I was about to bolt my landcruiser calipers to my strut when I realised that the different piston sizes in the 60 series calipers might mean it's import that the calipers are on the correct sides.

My reasoning was that the different piston sizes meant from the same pressure they create different forces on the pad. There must have been some reasoning for this by Mr toyota but I'm not sure what.

Currently I have my struts swapped around to mount the caliper on the front which means the large piston is up and therefore touching the disc first with the smaller piston touching second when rolling forward. How have others done this and can anybody share some theory about potential pad tapering?

cheers

Hey mate my calipers are mounted to the rear if that makes sense closer to the back of the car. I also had to grind a small section out of the brake pads to stop them from touching the hub part of the discs

Thanks guys,

I found a couple of pics of the calipers on the original landcruiser and they are mounted on the back on them too. I swapped my struts around and did it that way, I'm sure Mr Toyota did it that way for a reason.

yeh its to create an even bite on the pads, to stop them wearing unevenly. I think if you orient them so the bleeders are at the top (as they should be) then the pistons will be where they should be.

Front mount for me - works fine and no chance of fouling any steering components.
Oh and they STOP!!
Will be more than enough for a street car - pad choice is limited but that's about it.
Cheers

Thanks guys.

And it's no street car! I was going through a pair of pads per track day with the 240K brakes so this was a necessary upgrade.

The reasoning behind the difference in the pot-sizes is to prevent the leading edge of the pad, getting eaten away faster than the trailing edge, looked at it from the direction of rotation of the rotor.

To do this they made the leading pots small and then going bigger towards the back...
http://www.apracing.com/drawings/cp4340_1cd.pdf

so to conclude, it is possible to mount a stock trailing caliper in front of the axle by moving it over to the opposing wheel, and still have the bleed outlet at the top. The important part is not whether it's in front or behind the axle, it's the direction of rotation.... and always the smallest piston should see the rotor first.
