Yeh im not saying no dont do it, im saying beware cos the insurance companys might clue on and only want licenced mechanics do the work... Only time will tell.

I know what you mean about apprentices in dealerships! I hate the places. Ive done my time(just about) in a small 5 man operation where we do all sorts! Old stuff, Jap stuff, Euro stuff, 4x4, Diesel, LPG, new stuff etc. That and my old man is a mechanic so ive learnt off him before i got my apprenticeship

I did my apprenticeship in a small workshop where a tune up consisted cleaning and resetting sparkplugs, filing dags off points and resetting dwell correctly before adjusting timing and the old school ocilliscope to check leads etc. How many old V8 Holdens I had to fit hotter spark plugs to cylinders 6 & 8 for flogged valve guides I will never recall. I had to hunt down my first elec dizzy for the torana I had in my 20's. Bloody new generation part replacing mechanics. None of them interested in building a car without an overhead cam.

i hope i don't get in to trouble for changing the oil today!!! please give me the name of the insurance company that pays out for engine repairs on cars that have been worked on by qualified mechanics.

by the way don't let the plumbers licencing board catch you changing your own tap washers

Its not oil changes their concerned about. Its 1/2 witted yee-haas that do brakes and not know really what their doing! Its just like you getting up in your roof and re-wiring your house... except you could kill other people too if your brakes fail!

Beattie I think you are getting sucked into the bs that you have read on whatever other forum.
Next thing you know Jim's Mowing will be reporting people to the Lawn Mowing Board.

No i didnt get this from any forum mate. I have started this debate on all the other forums im on pretty much.

I know this is happening becuase i am in the trade and my boss has been teling us every development when he gets it. Maybe its his opinion that im beleiving(he is my boss and a bloody good bloke) and being proud of my profecion and wanting to protect it i took his side.

Sorry for the semi #### fight. I miss enformed people in the beginning and i corrected it. Now im just voicing my opinion!

EDIT FOR BURK

Read the whole thread! Dont just jump on somebody elses back mid way through! I have explained it will not be policed as such but the insurance companys wont touch ya.

I remember once when i was talking to a guy behind the parts counter at Auto-One, and he's like "eventually one of the young blokes here is gonna get asked for some points by a customer, and he's going to show them some centre punches"

haha.
