I' ve been reading the discussions about A series 5 speeds and L18 SSS gearboxes and the possibility of an interchange.
I'vejust sorted through some stuff that I was given recently and I have found an L series 5 speed which I am pretty certain is a dogleg box. Its in bits.
I'm gonna get some beer and put it alongside an A series 5 speed, also in bits and examine all three closely this weekend.
I'll report on what the result is .

The A series casings are tiny compared to any L series box I've seen. sorry, but there's no way will the bellhousings or internals will interchange.

I know there are a handful of these around (Stanza dogleg 5spd with A series pattern bellhousing) but I think they are an oddball factory bellhousing to accomplish it.

There is the B210 5-speed that uses the same internals as the L-series tranny ... maybe it's not common in Oz ...

The other part of the previous discussion was the a-series "big" 4-speed front housing (per the parts catalog) might ... maybe ... interchange with the L-series 5-speed housing

You're dead right.
I put these two boxes side by side and there looks be no way that they are interchangeable without a whole different front housing. The weather was cold, but the beer was cold.
It was worth the look.
I believe (and you may know for certain) that the NZ Stanza has an A14 with a modified Stanza short 5 speed gearbox that does have the suitable front on it.
Can you confirm?

89mm, what are the casting numbers on each of your trannies? They should have something like HW60 or 56A on the bell area.

What we are thinking is that since the 60 internals interchange between four-speed and five-speed, and between A-series and L-series, the right transmissions might be able to swap front housings.

I'm not 100% sure on how this is done, but there is gentleman here in NZ who has taken a "dogleg" 5 speed L16 gearbox and the front section of a C20 van gearbox & mated the two together (with little or no effort), the result is a bullet proof "dogleg" 5 speed gearbox that bolts to an "A" series, now of course the cross member & drive shaft will also need alterations.

I also believe the same gentlemen has moved 4th gear to 5th, retain the original 1st & 2nd gears, introduced 2 new gears (as 3rd & 4th), end result being a strong and

From the parts fiches for 110, 210 and 310

For B110 and 210 no 5 speeds are shown.
For sunny (310) there are two 5 speed trans, FS5W60 up to 7/79, FS5W60A 8/79 to 8/1980. No mention of the FS5C63A (stanza style) trans. I have an A series 63A being reconditioned at the moment.

The 63A box is identical to the one in my sunny behind the L20B except for the A series bell houing and A series sized input shaft.
