If an engine has been sitting for an extended period of time, or a fresh swap with a second hand engine into your car it would be recommended to remove the spark plugs and crank the engine until the oil light goes off. It will give you an indication if everything else is going o.k while cranking and when you are satisfied that oil is up, start the engine.

An engine that has not been started for several months can have the oil drained back even from the filter and may chatter for up to 15 or 20 seconds depending on the condition of the pump and how far it has to travel to get to the oil galleries and make the pressure.

The fact that you say it's a grinding noise mog, is a bit scary. Lets hope it is the low pressure clatter that dd mentioned.

ok. ive taken the pressure sensor out and cranked it over, oil comes out of that so i dont believe that the issue is oil pressure related.

Sound was still there with no aux belt on it. Ill check the travel of the clutch pedal, might be the release bearing.

dizzy is the same one that came out of it and so is the fuel pump so i dont expect them to be be the issue.

Could this sound be generated from the headers? Its not really a grinding noise, quite hard to explain actually.

ill check the release bearing and get back.

I know this is a little off the original topic - but if you buy an engine to put in a car, spend the extra few bucks for a sump gasket set and take it off to check it. A friend of mine lost an engine shortly after buying (had been in ok condition allegedly but had been sitting in a shed for years) the oil in the sump had formed a major sludge obstructing the oil pump pickup screen and it resulted in oil starvation, a spun bearing, and seizing the engine. had he just taken off the sump and cleaned it out it'd probably still be going today (judging by the rest of the engine when we tore it down, it wasn't actually so bad.

If you have such an engine and don't want to pull apart the oil pump to pack with grease or prime it, a 'trick' you can do is pour about 8 litres of el cheapo oil in the sump and with the spark plugs out crank it over till it gets oil pressure, then drop the sump bolt and drain about half back out. The much higher oil level in the sump basically helps 'push' oil up the oil pump pickup, and gets the oil pump primed a lot quicker.

Was the engine new? you say for the first time and it had been standing, had the motor been standing since built or was it running and you just parked it for 6months?

Things A15's dont like:
Oil pan, it must be A15 or it will touch the crank
Oil pump, must be modified to clear A-15 crank unless you payed for a A15 specific pump (A12 and A14 drive gear clip the connecting rod)
They can battle to prime, as somone else said, fill her right up with 7-8L cheap oil, swing till you got pressure then let half of it back out (dont ever start it and run it with that much oil!)

I've had a similar noise that turned out to be the clutch cover ( the thin metal piece) hitting/rubbing against the flywheel. You said you were going to remove this part, but you didn't say if you had. You can bolt the starter motor back on without this plate. It's not the starter motor stuck on,is it? I've had this happen & it was the scariest sound I've ever heard. Or maybe the throwout bearing has worn out, that can make bad noises when it fails.

yea i didnt get around to doing the metal plate. Ill have a shot at that tomorrow. Ill give the plate a push with something while the engine is running to see if that changes the noise, if it does then that would establish that the cover is the culprit in this case.
