hay im not really familiar with the a12 mod side of thing as with newer motors like efi..
but im after some advise on a upgrade on my a12 stock motor.. 2 get alittle more grunt...it already has 2'' exhaust besides that all standard...

whip the head off and match the ports and give it a polish, that with the 40s will help. if youve got $$ maby you could get some bigger valves for it.

i would say can the a12 idea, spend a few extra dollars and get an a14 or A15, and do the same thing, lot bigger power gain

I note with interest that no one mentioned a balance job, or blueprint, or a mild cam upgrade, just the overcarburation.
I run the stock 1200GX setup Twin Hitachi's, or SU types] & it has proven to be great. Thats because people who knew what they were doing designed & made it.
Twin 40mm Delortos are very nice, but on an otherwise stock 1200, i dont think so.

If your car has the late A12 engine [altenator on the distributor side] then a replacement engine of the A14 or A15 persuasion may well be a good & cost effective way to go.

i only sugested the head work because it doesnt involve taking the motor out, you can do most of the work yourself and its cheeper than bottom end work. cam is a good idea but can you do it without taking the block out and to bits? and also bang for buck head works has to be the best.

thank heaps for info.. the datsun 120y i got is just for a bit of rally packing i have a ca18 ute and aslo a runaround car for work so i cant have it off the road im thinking a cam and a webber... will do the job...give me just that littl bit more grunt..

For general street work, ONE webber [or Delorto] will prove to work better than two, but it doesen't impress the wankers.
One carb will also be easier to tune & will also cost a lot less. Now the big qiestion. Does anyone make a single carb manifold for these engines?

I have been watching "experts" overcarburate their, & others engines since i was old enough to hold a spanner. It seems that each successive generation has learned nothing.
I ran a 1200 engine in my wife's 1000 with flat top pistons, a "light sports grind" cam, full blueprint job, stock head & a late single carb manifold with a 1500 carb right down to the stock air cleaner. This engine would not have won at Bathurst, but gave a SURPRISING performance. More than the sum of it's parts.
I later upgraded it with a 120Y type GX head & carbs that we found on an engine in a wreckers around here. [The head was modified for propper rocker oiling on a 1200 block]

Big carbs on a stock engine usually lead to big cost, big problems & big dissapointments.

Hell, i'm running dual quads on my'57 Dodge Hemi & i'm woried that the 400cfm Carter AFB's will be too big. Ahh, never mind, they're vacuum secondary types, so it'l be OK.

Balanced performance modifications that end up becoming a balanced performance engine will usually yeild the best results, don't you agree?
