Twin weber 40s have more power than GX carburetors (Twin Hitachi). With $1000 you can buy a nice used set and pay to have them tuned on a dyno. They look tough too. Just make sure to buy a set with appropriate venturi size.

If you have $1k to spend, If spent wisely, I would be tempted to go with efi. I'm sure it could be done. As much as I like carbies, efi can be leaps ahead, especially when it comes to efficiency.

for a street driver the gx carbies are far better, actually im much happier with gx carbs on my rally car over the webers i used to have

i say go gx especially if you dont wont the hassel of re-tuning, webers are shocking for that

efi for $1000 - no chance, not a system worth having

You could get a single throttle body EFI for $1000. Should be smoother than a carburetor, but the performance won't be nearly as good as with twin carburetors. And like 1200RC says, with Twin Hitachis you get power and smoothness.

Not sure why there is a misconception that Webers (and Dellortos) go out of tune. They are fixed jet and the only thing adjustable on them is the idle mixture and balance (when two or more carbs), and these only change if using a screw-driver).

Properly set up Webers/Dellortos, especially on a 'mild' engine, are very tractable and relatively economical (though unlikely to be as economical as "SU" type carbs.

That said, no carbs can ever be tuned perfectly across the rev and load range like EFI.

With a $1k budget I'd go Side-Drafts everytime. Gives plenty of scope for further tuning in future too.
