Nissan South Africa have updated with new pics of the 1400 Bakkie since i last visited. Just thought I'd make a point of it.

The new pictures are very toned-down compare to last year's. Makes the Bakkie look very basic.

I wonder if they've changed to fuel injection this year ...

does this injection fit on an a series?

is it still running the A series.

that is amazing that they are still making a car that has been made for like the last 30 odd years
just shows how good the little datto is hey

So, by this logic, the fact that the Hindustan Ambassador is still made in India makes the Morris Oxford a good car????

I'm thinking there's probably another reason...

Oooooh, check this!

New Ambassadors...

About the ambassador being or not being a good car, it depends on the point of view and the intended use for the car. In 3rd world countries, people do not have the resources to get fancy or expensive vehicles, they need reliability before looks or status simbols. A Ambassador might be stronger, more reliable, consume less gas/diesel , and be tougher under extreme conditions. In the same way as a racing horse would not survive in the Himalayas hauling bags of cargo and potatoes, or in tha Andes, hauling loads , LLamas in the Andes and donkeys in the Himalayas are better than any expensive Arabian race horse, so, which would be a good animal to own, a Arabian horse, a Donkey, or a Llama?...depends on the situation. To a person in India who is going to drive untill the temp gauge starts showing a high temp, who will check the water only when overheating is evident, never changes oil, just replenishes it, in cases like that, the Ambassador is a better choice than a Porsche. I'm sure in S A, the 1200 truck is the best for the medium, the rough terrain and the level of automobile maintenance common S africans give to their vehicles. In Mexico, the 1968 year model VW bus is still being made, with its boxer 4 cyl flat engine. The VW bug from the 60's was made untill the begining of this year, 2003. I think models like this prove that reliability is not always late model, but proven toughness under all conditions.
The S A Balkkie is one of those tough soldiers.

The Hindustan Motors Ambasador is just one of those "horses for courses.' I liken it's appearance to a steaming dog t**d, yet it is much more economical to make by virtue of it's recycled dies. Obviously they have engineered out any inherent weakness in the chassis or body & the 1.8 engine is an Isuzu unit. [Don't know about the 2l engine] This drivetrain is reasonably good spit.
If you check the specs, it's a ghastly modern day pommy [limey] hot rod, with all the features.

Somebody suggested that by the end of the decade they will upgrade to the 1954 English Zephyr body. Aaaaaaargh

While this car needed VAST re-engineering to keep it in production, the Bakkie is little changed from the 1970 car [ute] & this is what makes it the classic that it is.

The VW's in Mexico? Beats me, after all, no matter what you do with them, they're still dub dub's

With the Bakkie's styling, it can truly be said that "Something with class is always in style"
May they be making them for decades to come.
Chris
